As we mentioned in our previous article, the resurgence of Raunchy Comedies and Sex Comedies in the 2000’s began with American Pie (1999). This film harkened back to the days of Animal House (1978) and Porky’s (1981) which featured Sex Comedy with crude humor and outrageous sexual situations. American Pie also spawned sequels including American Pie 2 (2001), American Wedding (2003) and American Reunion (2012). For better or worse, the next generation of Sex Comedies would incorporate a level of raunchiness not previously seen in these types of films.
Other prominent Sex Comedies combined with Raunchy Comedy Humor (and some gross-out humor) of the 2000’s included Road Trip (2000), Tomcats (2001), Out Cold (2001), Not Another Teen Movie (2001), Say It Isn’t So (2001), Slackers (2002), National Lampoon’s Van Wilder (2002), The Sweetest Thing (2002), The Last Run (2004), Along Came Polly (2004), Eurotrip (2004), The Girl Next Door (2004), The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005), Dirty Deeds (2005), Accepted (2006), I-See-You.com (2006), Cashback (2006), It’s A Boy Girl Thing (2006), Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj (2006), Caffeine (2007), Superbad (2007), Knocked Up (2007), The Brothers Solomon (2007), Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), Senior Skip Day (2008), Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008), Sex Drive (2008), Fired Up! (2009), Miss March (2009), Baby on Board (2009), I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell (2009) and Women in Trouble (2009).
On the other end of the spectrum were Raunchy Comedies which featured foul language, included gross-out humor or adult-themed situations and were rated-R. These films often had Sex Comedy elements, but sex typically was not part of the main narrative or plot. These Raunchy Comedies also focused on adults versus Sex Comedies which generally focused on teenagers and High School or College-themed sexual situations. This trend of the adult-themed Raunchy Comedies started in the 1990’s with The Farrelly Brothers and Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions and accelerated into the next decade to the point that the 2000’s could be considered the Golden Age of Raunchy Comedy films.
Popular Raunchy Comedies of the 2000’s included Me, Myself & Irene (2000), Next Friday (2000), Super Troopers (2001), Saving Silverman (2001), Freddy Got Fingered (2001), Wet Hot American Summer (2001), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Shallow Hal (2001), Run Ronnie Run (2002), Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002), Friday After Next (2002), The Hot Chick (2002), Old School (2003), Bad Santa (2003), Team America: World Police (2004), Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004), Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004), Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), Wedding Crashers (2005), Waiting… (2005), The Ringer (2005), Grandma’s Boy (2006), You, Me and Dupree (2006), Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006), Reno 911!: Miami (2007), The Heartbreak Kid (2007), Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008), Step Brothers (2008), Role Models (2008) and The Hangover (2009).
