After the onslaught of 1980’s Sex Comedies, the 1990’s shifted gears towards more Raunchy Comedies featuring crude and juvenile Gross Out Humor. Though some of these films had classic Sex Comedy themes, the majority of these films often pushed the limits of the PG-13 and R-ratings with extreme visual comedy. Dumb and Dumber (1994), Billy Madison (1995) and Friday (1995) would kickstart this juvenile, raunchy comedy theme and would continue through the latter half of the decade.

Raunchy Comedies featuring more gross-out humor in the late 90’s included Kingpin (1996), Private Parts (1997), The Wedding Singer (1998), Dirty Work (1998), There’s Something About Mary (1998), Big Daddy (1999), South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) and Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999). Many of these films were made by The Farrelly Brothers or by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions.

Though Sex Comedies had taken a back seat to Raunchy Comedies during the 1990’s, there was a slight resurgence in sex comedy situations within prominent films including Eight Days a Week (1997), Going All the Way (1997), Booty Call (1997), Orgazmo (1997), Trojan War (1997), The Opposite of Sex (1998), Freak Talk About Sex (1999) and American Pie (1999). American Pie is the most significant film of this list as it would help launch a new era of Sex Comedies in the 2000’s.

Our complete list of Raunchy Comedies & Sex Comedies features over 341+ films from 1972 – 2023. For the purposes of this article, we’re going to combine both the Raunchy Comedies and Sex Comedies into our list of recommended films below.

Classic, must-see 1990’s Raunchy Comedies: Dumb and Dumber (1994), Billy Madison (1995), Friday (1995), Kingpin (1996), Eight Days a Week (1997), Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), The Wedding Singer (1998), There’s Something About Mary (1998), Big Daddy (1999) and American Pie (1999).

Lesser-known 1990’s Raunchy Comedies that didn’t make our list: Ski School (1990), Body Waves (1992), Can It Be Love (1992), National Lampoon’s Favorite Deadly Sins (1995), Meet Wally Sparks (1997) and Ringmaster (1998).

    Trojan War

Top Raunchy Comedies from the 1990’s You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Brad is about to hook up with the girl of his dreams, but runs into a problem, no condom. So, Brad sets out into the night to find one, running into many obstacles along the way, while not knowing his best friend, Leah is in love with him.

KBZ’s Take: This film isn’t a classic of the subgenre but does have its moments. The plot about the teenager trying to score with his dream girl but finds himself in a chaotic adventure trying to find a condom has been done before and better. However, we felt the need to list this film for fans of the subgenre and completists who are looking for more rare and lesser-known raunchy comedy films.

    Going All the Way

Top Raunchy Comedies from the 1990’s You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Korean War era veterans and ex-classmates Gunner Casselman and Sonny Burns reunite upon their return home. Gunner, who spent the war years abroad, is trying to convince his mother that his gal Marty is good enough for him, while Sonny, who was stationed stateside, is torn between loyal Buddy and tempting Gale Ann. As they commiserate, the men realize that they’re outgrowing the lives they lived before the war.

KBZ’s Take: One of the lesser-known coming-of-age period pieces of the subgenre, Going All the Way is worth seeing for Jeremy Davies performance alone. Davies has carved out a niche as an often-neurotic character in film and TV such as Lost and Ravenous (1999), and this is a must-see film if you are a fan of his work. As for the film itself, it follows typical plot points as similar coming-of-age period pieces but it’s the roles of Ben Affleck, Amy Locane, Rachel Weisz and Rose McGowan that make it worth watching.

    Orgazmo

Top Raunchy Comedies from the 1990’s You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Joe Young is a devout Mormon living in L.A. trying to raise enough money to go back to Utah and marry his girlfriend, Lisa. Joe is spreading the word about the church of Latter Day Saints one day when he’s confronted by two burly bodyguards. A scuffle breaks out, and Joe’s martial arts skills impress Maxxx Orbison, who directs pornographic movies.

KBZ’s Take: How much you enjoy this film will likely hinge on whether or not you enjoy South Park-style humor. By creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, this film features some very hilarious raunchy humor that comes very close to crossing the line. But that is what the pair of filmmakers are known for so you shouldn’t expect anything less going into this film (based on its title alone).

    House Party

Top Raunchy Comedies from the 1990’s You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Young Kid has been invited to a party at his friend Play’s house. But after a fight at school, Kid’s father grounds him. However, Kid sneaks out when his father falls asleep. But Kid doesn’t know that three of the thugs at school have decided to give him a lesson in behavior.

KBZ’s Take: The original film which spawned a few sequels and a recent remake, is a classic Kid ‘n Play comedy. The duo were a popular hip-hop duo in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s and it’s surprising their first film features raunchy comedy given their fan base at the time. While the film is a typical teen comedy centered around a party, the film is worthwhile to check out for one of Martin Lawrence’s earlier performances.

    Glory Daze

Top Raunchy Comedies from the 1990’s You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Its punk rock meets Animal House in this campus comedy that stars Ben Affleck as Jack, a soon-to-be graduate who finds he’s having a difficult time letting go of the college life — and decides maybe he doesn’t have to. Also questioning whether there’s life after college are Jack’s roommates: Rob, who fears domestication; comic-strip artist Mickey, who’s shy around girls; intellectual party animal Slosh; and perpetual student Dennis.

KBZ’s Take: A lesser-known subgenre film that has early career performances from Ben Affleck, Sam Rockwell and Alyssa Milano. The film’s Santa Cruz setting is unique to the film (and subgenre) though the film relies on common themes and situations of life after college. The film also has been mentioned as a successor to Animal House (1978), but the film would quality more as a Raunchy Comedy vs. a Sex Comedy. Comedy-wise, there are a few funny moments in the film, but we’re listing the film more for rarity than anything else. It’s a recommended watch for fans and completists of the subgenre.

    Booty Call

Top Raunchy Comedies from the 1990’s You Haven’t Seen

Plot Rushon is sexually pent-up and ready to take thing things to the next level with his girlfriend, Nikki. But when he calls for a date, she asks to make it a double — bringing along her brash friend Lysterine, whom Rushon sets up with his lewd buddy, Bunz. Things go better than expected. As the evening transitions from the restaurant to the bedroom, the two men go on a madcap search for what will surely make the night complete: condoms.

KBZ’s Take: 1997 was a banner year for Raunchy Comedy and Booty Call was one of the raunchiest. Though it has a similar plot line to Trojan War (earlier on this list), this film crosses all types of lines with both Sex Comedy blended with Gross Out Humor. The film also stars Tommy Davidson and Jamie Foxx who were a few years removed from their In Living Color sketch comedy days. And if you’re familiar with some of their skits from In Living Color, you likely can guess what this film entails with an R-rating. Recommended for fans of the subgenre.

    Dirty Work

Top Raunchy Comedies from the 1990’s You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Unemployed and recently dumped, Mitch and his buddy Sam start a revenge-for-hire business to raise the $50,000 that Sam’s father needs to get a heart transplant. The dirty duo brings down a movie theater manager and hires hookers to pose as dead bodies during a live TV ad. When a wealthy developer hires the guys to trash a building (so that he can have it condemned), problems arise and a feud ensues.

KBZ’s Take: How much you will enjoy this film is entirely dependent on whether or not you find Norm MacDonald’s humor hilarious or annoying. We always enjoyed MacDonald’s offbeat, sarcastic humor and this film has it in spades. The film is a bit of a cult classic and it’s easy to see why – there are many hilarious situations in this film that are made even funnier by the sarcastic dialogue. There are also quite a few cameos by Saturday Night Live alums Chris Farley, Chevy Chase and Adam Sandler.

    The Opposite of Sex

Top Raunchy Comedies from the 1990’s You Haven’t Seen

Plot: A 16-year-old girl visits her gay half-brother and ends up seducing his boyfriend, thus wreaking havoc on all of their lives.

KBZ’s Take: This is the type of film where the plot cascades into increasing chaos with great comedic effect. With razor sharp wit and black comedy, both Christina Ricci and Lisa Kudrow steal the show as opposing forces on the seduction by Ricci’s character. It’s also a great script as you rarely can guess where things are going, and you’ll be left with quite a few WTF’s and laughter as situations escalate into the absurd. Highly recommended film that every fan of the subgenre should seek out.

    Freak Talk About Sex

Top Raunchy Comedies from the 1990’s You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Slacker Dave (Josh Hamilton) returns to his hometown in Upstate New York. He talks of being a writer but gets a job at a store, and constantly works on his car so he can hit the road again. Meanwhile, he avoids relationships and ignores everyone’s advice by reuniting with “Freak” (Steve Zahn), a boyhood friend who still lives in his parents’ basement, smoking pot and dispensing stoner wisdom. When even Freak shows the beginnings of adult behavior, Dave realizes he may have to grow up too.

KBZ’s Take: This is one film that we all seemingly missed out on when it first came out, but we’re glad we finally saw it as it’s one of the best Raunchy Comedy films of the 1990’s. Most of the raunchiness comes from Steve Zahn’s hilarious character, Freak, and it’s easy to see how he came to star in so many future Raunchy Comedies over the following 10-15 years. Despite the raunchy and crude humor found in the film, it still has a heart as the film explores Dave’s journey becoming an adult. A great film and highly recommended for fans of the subgenre.

    Eight Days a Week

Top Raunchy Comedies from the 1990’s You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Peter loves his next-door neighbor Erica and, on the advice of his grandfather, decides to camp out on her front lawn for the entire summer, or until she agrees to go out with him. His father is none too happy about the idea and refuses to let his son back in the house, even to get a change of clothes.

KBZ’s Take: This is a surprisingly good film that balances coming-of-age period situations with raunchy and sex humor comedy. At the core of the film are the two leads – Peter (Joshua Schaefar) and Erica (Keri Russell) – who have a certain chemistry that works in the film. Most of the raunchy comedy, however, is delivered by Matt (R.D. Robb) – Peter’s friend who tries (and fails) at every form of adolescent masturbation to great comedic effect. Highly recommended film of the subgenre.
