From 2014 – 2017, Raunchy Comedy & Sex Humor continued as a popular theme of the subgenre as did Sci-Fi & Horror genre crossovers and Female-focused Coming-of-Age films.
Raunchy Comedy & Sex Humor films in the subgenre included Neighbors (2014), Premature (2014), The Inbetweeners 2 (2014), Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (2015) and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016).
Horror-themed Teen & College Comedies continued to rise as the most popular genre crossover with The Final Girls (2015), Scouts Guide to the Apocalypse (2015), Happy Death Day (2017) and The Babysitter (2017). The Sci-Fi genre was also represented with The Invisible Boy (2014) and Premature (2014) and the Fantasy genre with Girl Asleep (2015).
Female-focused Coming-of-Age films also remained a popular theme of the subgenre with Barely Lethal (2015), Pitch Perfect 2 (2015), The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015), Mistress America (2015), The Great Gilly Hopkins (2015), Girl Asleep (2015), The Edge of Seventeen (2016) and Lady Bird (2017).
Other notable subgenre films from 2014 – 2017 included Paper Towns (2015), Sing Street (2016), Everybody Wants Some!! (2016), Class Rank (2017) and Pitch Perfect 3 (2017).
For our list of the Top Teen & College Comedies You Haven’t Seen – 2014 – 2017, we selected some lesser-known films from a variety of subgenre themes. We also tried to select films that were representative of mid-2010’s culture and nostalgia.

Girl Asleep
Plot: Introverted 15-year-old girls is thrown a surprise birthday party and finds herself in a parallel fantasy world.
KBZ’s Take: This hidden gem of a film comes courtesy of Australia. Filled with Quirky comedy and interactions between Greta (Bethany Whitmore) and Elliott (Harrison Feldman), it’s their budding friendship that drives the first half of the film. Then the film takes a turn into a bizarre, fantasy world where she confronts situations which help her adapt to turning 15-years-old. It’s a hard film to describe but recommended for fans of the subgenre.

Plot: in 1979, an Indian family moves to America and their 10-year-old boy tries to adapt to America.
KBZ’s Take: This is one of the better films about the “Americanization” of immigrants. Unlike similar themed films, Growing Up Smith takes a more sincere look at what that Americanization includes (warts and all) at the expense of losing your own cultural identity. Jason Lee provides a lot of the subtle comic relief in the film but also excels as the “American” father the 10-year-old boy looks up to. It’s a great little film and highly recommended for fans of the subgenre.

Class Rank
Plot: Two high school misfits join forces to try and overtake the local school board.
KBZ’s Take: This directorial effort from Eric Stoltz is filled with offbeat humor. Imagine taking Max Fischer from Rushmore (1998) and Tracy Flick from Election (1999) and have them join forces in a film. That’s basically what you have in Class Rank with Bernard (Skyler Gisondo) and Veronica (Olivia Holt) who team up against the school board but slowly find each other in the process.

Plot: 16-year-old assassin wants a normal teenage life so enrolls at a suburban high school.
KBZ’s Take: You’ll have to suspend disbelief for the premise of this movie, but once you do, it’s a fun ride. Though many of the plot points will seem familiar, the film is worth watching based on the young assassin but awkward teenager in Megan (Hailee Steinfeld). Steinfeld’s performance helps the film rise above similar subgenre fare and features a great supporting cast with Sophie Turner, Jessica Alba and Samuel L. Jackson. Though this film will likely be most enjoyed by the female teen demographic, it’s still a film worth checking out for fans of the subgenre.

Paper Towns
Plot: Shy high schooler embarks on a quest to find his childhood crush who left clues behind to her whereabouts.
KBZ’s Take: This film is more of a mystery and adventure film more than a straight up comedy. But as a subgenre film, it’s one of the more intriguing to check out. The great dynamic between Q (Nat Wolff) and Margo (Cara Delevingne) is reminiscent of some of the best teen romantic couplings of 80’s subgenre films. It’s a film that will likely be found more enjoyable by older viewers who still yearn for those romances of the past.

Plot: Pre-teen discovers that his babysitter is part of a Satanic Cult.
KBZ’s Take: Like Fright Night (1985), this film excels in juggling both Horror and Comedy. Bee (Samara Weaving) is the main reason to watch this film as her role as The Babysitter is one of the best of the subgenre. Recommended for fans of the subgenre who enjoy Dark and Black Comedy films.

Plot: Two high school girls are best friends until one dates the other’s older brother.
KBZ’s Take: Though this film is female-focused and targeted at the teen demographic, it’s actually one of the better films of the subgenre that will be enjoyed by older demographics as well. Hailee Steinfeld appears in this film as she was a popular subgenre actress during the 2010’s decade. However, the films main draw is her character Nadine and the interactions and evolving mentorship with her teacher Max (Woody Harrelson). In fact, this is one of Harrelson’s best performances throughout his decades long career. Highly recommended film of the subgenre.

Plot: Two guys make a pact to lose their virginity when one of the friends comes out as gay.
KBZ’s Take: This film is a case of ‘threading the needle’ as it’s subject matter (and comedic situations) will find people either loving the film or hating it. We thought it did a great job of taking a situation where a friend finds that his best friend is now gay and doesn’t stray away from the Raunchy and Sex Comedy theme of the film. That is an accomplishment as are the very funny sequences and situations found in the film. The film also sports a great comedic cast with Nicholas Braun, Hunter Cope, Dakota Johnson, Nick Offerman and Gary Cole. Highly recommended film of the subgenre.

Sing Street
Plot: In 1980’s Dublin, a boy at a new school starts a band to impress the girl he likes.
KBZ’s Take: This Irish film is not a well known or seen film, but it’s one of the best films of the subgenre. It’s a coming-of-age film where students start to discover themselves through music of the 1980’s and a new, innovative format – music videos. Watching Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) and his bandmates slowly come into their own as band, is one of the most enjoyable moments you’ll ever see on film. It also features a great supporting role with Jack Reynor (as Conor’s older brother) who introduces him to new rock groups and music styles. We cannot recommend this film enough and hope you’ll move this to the top of your queue right away.

Plot: Caught in a bizarre time loop, a college co-ed finds herself repeatedly getting killed by the same masked maniac every day.
KBZ’s Take: This is one of our personal favorite films of both the Time Loop and Horror Comedy subgenres. It’s also one of the best Teen & College Comedy films as it parodies College and Sorority life. Jessica Rothe is the engine that makes this film go playing the college student Tree who finds herself dying every day. And every death is different with great comedic effect. We’re still amazed at how many people still have not seen this film (or it’s sequel Happy Death Day 2U (2019)) as it’s one of the best subgenre films that uses Horror and Sci-Fi crossover genres to great effect. Highly recommended film (and one of the best) of the subgenre.
