The Survival Drama Film subgenre often falls under three distinct Genres – Drama, Action and Thriller. The themes of Survival Films often include a man or woman surviving against nature or, in some cases, are being hunted by other people. Though Survival Films can also be Horror, we have an entirely separate list for that with Survival Horror Films. There are a few distinctions between what classifies a Survival Film as Drama or Horror, and Cast Away (2000) and Sweetheart (2019) are great examples of this distinction. While both films deal with a person stranded alone on an island, Castaway deals with psychological elements of isolation and the fight for survival (i.e. Drama) while Sweetheart deals with horror elements of a woman being hunted by a creature on an island (i.e. Horror).

Survival Dramas have been a popular subgenre in film since the 1940’s with Lifeboat (1944). However, it wasn’t until William Golding’s classic novel became a film in Lord of the Flies (1963) that the subgenre was defined. This classic tale spawned not only a remake with Lord of the Flies (1990) but its themes have been incorporated into numerous TV and films over the years with the latest being the popular TV series Yellowjackets (2021). The 1960’s also saw other subgenre defining films released with The last Man on Earth (1964), Sands of the Kalahari (1965), The Naked Prey (1966) and Marooned (1969).

In the 1970’s, Sci-fi became a popular Genre of survival drama films with The Omega Man (1971), Silent Running (1972), Soylent Green (1973), A Boy and His Dog (1975), Capricorn One (1977) and Quintet (1979). While the subgenre theme of human hunting other humans had emerged in the 1960’s, the 1970’s saw even more films of this type with The Million Game (1970), Deliverance (1972) and Open Season (1974). Other classics in the subgenre were The Light at the Edge of the World (1971), Walkabout (1971), Man in the Wilderness (1971) and Jeremiah Johnson (1972).

    The Survivalist

Top Survival Drama Films You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Solitary man hiding deep in the forest after an apocalyptic event, is found by two women.

KBZ’s Take: Very underrated and little seen post-Apocalypse survival drama, The Survivalist is a slow burn of a film as a man, self-isolated from society, is found by others. As the only person with food due to his ability to grow food, what you guess might happen isn’t what you think. This film has enough twists and goes against conventional plotting for a quite engaging drama. Recommended film for fans of both the Survival Drama and Post-Apocalypse subgenres.

    The Naked Prey

Top Survival Drama Films You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Men on a safari wrong a tribe and then are killed one by one…with the last man hunted by tribe members.

KBZ’s Take: Though this film is from the 1960’s, it’s still one of the best and most engaging survival films. It wastes no time getting right into the action with the last remaining safari member being hunted. Word of caution – though this is primarily a drama/thriller hybrid, there are some gruesome scenes of the other safari members being killed by the tribe.

    Kon-Tiki

Top Survival Drama Films You Haven’t Seen

Plot: True story of explorer Thor Heyerdahl and his effort to cross the Pacific Ocean on a wood raft in 1947.

KBZ’s Take: This is one of those survival films where a person’s ego gets them into a position for survival. While trying to prove South American’s crossed the Pacific Ocean to settle in Polynesia, Heyerdahl and his team use the same materials for a ship that would have been used ages ago. It’s a great biographical film with numerous suspenseful moments as the team encounters danger after danger on the Pacific Ocean.

    The Way Back

Top Survival Drama Films You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Several men escape a Russian gulag at the start of World War II and have to cross deserts and mountains to safety.

KBZ’s Take: This film is what the survival film subgenre is all about – people going against all the odds for survival. The film has a great cast with Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, Mark Strong and Colin Farrell with assured direction by Peter Weir. It’s one of his best films and is an epic survival film not many people have seen. It’s a must-see film of the subgenre.

    Arctic

Top Survival Drama Films You Haven’t Seen

Plot: A man stranded in the Arctic, has to decide whether to stay at his camp or trek across the frozen tundra to survive.

KBZ’s Take: This film uses familiar survival drama film tropes – weather disasters at the worst time, impeding obstacles, etc. – but it’s the film’s execution which raises it to one of the better survival drama films. With hardly any dialogue throughout the film, Mads Mikkelsen carries the films on his shoulders through many tense and emotional moments. It’s a must-see film for fans of the subgenre.

    #5
    Into the Wild

Top Survival Drama Films You Haven’t Seen

Plot: College grad sells all his possessions to hitchhike to Alaska and live in the wilderness.

KBZ’s Take: Unless you were a Pearl Jam/Eddie Vedder fan or Indie film fan, you might have missed this amazing film from 2007. Part spiritual journey and part survival drama, the film achieves greatness from its acting performances (Emile Hirsch, Kristen Stewart, Hal Holbrook) and beautiful cinematography of the Alaskan wilderness. It’s a great film to watch if you ever thought you could handle living (and surviving) off the grid.

    The 12th Man

Top Survival Drama Films You Haven’t Seen

Plot: A Norwegian resistance fighter flees the Nazis through Scandinavia.

KBZ’s Take: This film is defined by its 3rd Act which is one of the best suspense sequences in the entire World War 2 film subgenre. The film is part Survival Drama and part Chase film as Norwegian Jan Baalsrud (Thomas Gullestad) is relentlessly pursued by the German Kurt Stage (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). There’s a lot of great moments in this film and it’s one of the best of the entire World War 2 and Survival Drama subgenres.

    All Is Lost

Top Survival Drama Films You Haven’t Seen

Plot: Elderly sailing veteran deals with a sinking boat in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

KBZ’s Take: The best film you will ever see with less than 1 minute of dialogue. Robert Redford drives the film as the sailing vet who encounters one catastrophe after another while his ship is slowly sinking. This is a film that can get by without any dialogue as you’ll be fixated on how our hero will get out of his increasingly desperate situation.

    The Impossible

Top Survival Drama Films You Haven’t Seen

Plot: A family on vacation in Thailand is separated during a tsunami.

KBZ’s Take: We have seen tidal waves, earthquakes and other historical disasters on film, but never has a film shown the true dangers of a tsunami so effectively. The traumatic event is captured perfectly on film both with the tsunami and its effects and the family separated and searching for their loved ones. It’s one of the most powerful films you’ll ever see about ordinary people trying to rise above tragedy and one of the best Survival Drama films. One of KBZ’s highest recommended films to see.

    No Escape

Top Survival Drama Films You Haven’t Seen

Plot: American family in Thailand, is caught in a middle of a coup where foreigners are being executed.

KBZ’s Take: No Escape is a survival drama at heart but with non-stop action, thrills and tension. As the family slowly realizes what’s happening (with the coup), it’s a never-ending adrenaline rush as the family must continually battle for survival. It’s a film that never lets up while retaining its emotional core – the mother and father who will do anything to protect their children. While most survival drama films feature humans against nature, this film shows the worst of humans against humans due to politics. Must-see film of the subgenre.
