This is the fourth in a series of articles covering the top lesser known Eco-Horror Films by decade. Eco-Horror features narratives about Global Warming, Climate Change, Biohazards and other ecological disasters that affect the environment. A majority of these films also include elements of Natural Horror (or Animals Attack) films where the animal, mammal or marine life has suffered a mutation due to environmental negligence by humans.
Most Eco-Horror Films reside within the Horror, Sci-Fi and Thriller genres and are often closely aligned with other film subgenres including Disaster Films, Survival Dramas, Monster Films, Survival Horror Films, Biotech Films, Dystopian Future Films, Films About Genetic Engineering, Aquatic Thrillers, Conspiracy Thrillers and Films About Pandemics & Viruses.
Eco-Horror narratives tend to parallel the societal and ecological concerns of the era: nuclear proliferation and radiation in the 1950’s & 1960’s, climate change and corporate conspiracies in the 1970’s & 1990’s, genetic engineering in the 1980’s & 2000’s, and a combination of climate change, genetic engineering and dystopian futures in the 2010’s to the most recent subgenre films. Popular Eco-Horror Films over the decades include Them! (1954), Matango (1963), Soylent Green (1973), Jaws (1975), The Stuff (1985), Mimic (1997), The Host (2006), Annihilation (2018) and The Animal Kingdom (2023).

There are so many great Eco-Horror Films over the last 60 years that we felt it best to break down some of the subgenre’s forgotten and lesser-known gems by decade before we give you the Best Of list which will likely feature many films you’ve already heard of or have seen.

The 2000’s continued as a weak decade for Eco-Horror Films with only a few noteworthy subgenre films surrounded by mostly mediocre offerings. The decade also saw a continuation of similar themes from the 1990’s with Kaiju films, genetic engineering gone wrong and mutations caused by ecological disasters. One theme that did gain more prominence during this period involved climate change.
Though climate change had become a growing worldwide concern in the 1990’s and was reflected in films such as The Arrival (1996) and Habitat (1997), it wasn’t until the 2000’s that global warming and other effects of a hotter climate would start do dominate the subgenre in films such as The Day After Tomorrow (2004), The Last Winter (2006) and The Thaw (2009). Climate change would become even more prominent in subgenre films of the 2010’s that we’ll cover in our next article.
As for genetic engineering gone wrong, there were a host of films that utilized this theme including Mimic 2 (2001), Isolation (2005) and Black Sheep (2006). The theme of ecological disasters causing mutations were also present in films such as Eight Legged Freaks (2003), The Hills Have Eyes (2006) and The Host (2006).
And as for Kaiju Films, the decade would kick-off with the Millennium Era of Godzilla films with Godzilla 2000: Millennium (2000), Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000), Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001), Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002), Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003) and Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). Though this series of Godzilla films had less of a focus on eco-horror compared to prior decades, we will select the best film of the bunch for our list below.
