The Drugs & Narcos Film subgenre typically covers a variety of topics from cartel drug violence to small town drug pushers. Our list of Films About Drugs & Narcos covers these situations and also covers criminal drug use. For anything involving drug or alcohol rehab, those typically won’t be found in this list but rather in our list of Drama Films About Medical Issues.
Films featuring drug trafficking and cartels started to become popular in the 1980’s with Outland (1981), Scarface (1983), Extreme Prejudice (1987), and Tequila Sunrise (1988). A few other notable films from the decade covered drug use and crime with That Was Then…This Is Now (1985), Less Than Zero (1987) and Drugstore Cowboy (1989).
The 1990’s saw the Drugs & Narcos Film subgenre gain popularity as Films About Gangsters & The Mob became one of the most popular subgenres of the decade. This decade also produced some of the classic films of the Drugs & Narcos Film subgenre with New Jack City (1991), Clear and Present Danger (1994), Shallow Grave (1994), Trainspotting (1996), and Return to Paradise (1998).
It wasn’t until the 2000’s that we saw the Golden Age of Drugs & Narcos Films first start to appear as the subgenre became one of the most popular of the decade. Subgenre classics from this decade include Requiem for a Dream (2000), Blow (2001), The Salton Sea (2002), City of God (2002), 25th Hour (2002), 21 Grams (2003), Maria Full of Grace (2004) and American Gangster (2007). Wonderland (2003), Layer Cake (2004), Running Scared (2006) and Half Nelson (2006) are other notable efforts from this decade.
The 2010’s saw the Drugs & Narcos Film subgenre continue its popularity as Hollywood embraced cartels and drug lords as the enemies du jour for most Hollywood films. Contraband (2012), Savages (2012), We’re the Millers (2013), A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014), Escobar: Paradise Lost (2014), Sicario (2015), American Made (2017), The Mule (2018), Cold Pursuit (2019) and The Gentlemen (2019) all featured drug kingpins, drug bosses, and cartels as main antagonists in their films. Other notable films from this decade also include Animal Kingdom (2010), The Man from Nowhere (2010), Spring Breakers (2013), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) and White Boy Rick (2018).
The 2020’s have so far featured drug use over drug lords and criminals as the main focus within the subgenre. Project Power (2020), Synchronic (2020), Bliss (2021) and Cherry (2021) are recent films that show while the subgenre has retained its popularity, it’s focus has shifted to the criminal use of drugs and its effects over time.
Our list of Drugs & Narcos Films features over 198+ films from 1973 – 2021. The list includes the various aspects of the subgenre including drug trafficking, cartels, drug kingpins or bosses and criminal use or distribution of drugs. While there is some crossover with Mob films in this subgenre, we have tried our best to differentiate between the two subgenres with more mafia and gangster related films residing in our Films About Gangster & The Mob list. For our list of Top Drugs & Narcos Films You Haven’t Seen, we will likely need to create an additional list to cover all the subgenre films that have flown under the radar. For this list, honorable mentions include That Was Then…This Is Now (1985), King of New York (1990), Brokedown Palace (1999), Tequila Sunrise (1988), Shallow Grave (1994) and Maria Full of Grace (2004).

Plot: Two childhood friends now find themselves on the opposite ends of the law.
KBZ’s Take: This gritty action thriller features an amazing cast – Nick Nolte, Powers Boothe, Michael Ironside, Rip Torn, Maria Conchita Alonso and Clancy Brown. Fans of Director Walter Hill will enjoy this film as it features the same grim realism and raw action as some of his other classic efforts including The Warriors (1979) and Southern Comfort (1981).

Wonderland

Plot: Legendary porn actor John Holmes is involved in a drug deal and quadruple homicide.
KBZ’s Take: The first of two Val Kilmer films on our list, Wonderland is a very dark film that examines two versions of events leading to murder. While the narrative plays a bit like Boogie Nights (1997), this film focuses much more on a man who is on a downward trajectory both with his career and life. One of Val Kilmer’s best (but little known) efforts while he was still at the top of his game…

Cherry

Plot: College dropout and army medic turns to drugs and a life of crime.
KBZ’s Take: This is not an uplifting movie and is a depressing look at how someone eventually spirals out of control with drugs that leads to crime. Tom Holland (of Spiderman fame) gives an amazing performance as the former army medic dealing with PTSD. While the film received mixed reviews, we think it’s one of the best films of the Drugs & Narcos Film subgenre that deals more with the effect of drugs on individuals.

Deep Cover

Plot: Anti-drug squad officer goes undercover and works his way up to the boss.
KBZ’s Take: A film that is also one of the best Films About Undercover Agents, Deep Cover is a Neo Noir Thriller that is fast-paced and full of 1990’s style. As you might expect from the title, the film explores how Fishburne’s undercover agent (who swore to never do drugs) slowly loses himself in his undercover role to the point where he doesn’t know if he’s a cop or dealer any longer. Gritty film with some thrilling action sequences, it’s a lost gem of the 1990’s that shouldn’t be missed by fans of the Drugs & Narcos Film subgenre.

Plot: Young surfer falls for Pablo Escobar’s niece and is pulled into the family business.
KBZ’s Take: There is one reason to see this film – Benicio del Toro’s performance as Pablo Escobar. While Wagner Moura’s portrayal of Escobar in the Netflix series Narcos is generally considered the best, we have to say that del Toro’s portrayal exceeds even Moura’s portrayal. From a loving father’s gaze at his children to the cold execution of his enemies, del Toro seamlessly transitions between father and killer to reveal the monster inside. The story itself is great too but del Toro steals the show and it’s not a performance to be missed.

Plot: Two friends must choose whether or not to help a third friend who was arrested for drug possession in Malaysia.
KBZ’s Take: This film shows an underused aspect of the Drugs & Narcos Film genre – the extreme measures some countries take against drug use and crime. Brokedown Palace (1990) explores similar ground but Return to Paradise is a more thoughtful examination of how far someone would go to save a friend. If your friend is sentenced to die because of drugs you gave him, would you return to the scene of the crime (and country) to face the consequences and save your friend?

Plot: A cop infiltrates a drug kingpins crack operation.
KBZ’s Take: This film was very popular in the 1990’s and is also included in our list of Films About Gangsters & The Mob. However, New Jack City is more about the rise of Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes) as a drug kingpin who is making millions selling crack. While it does have some Gangster Film tropes, it’s a much better film when it examines the drug kingpin rising while destroying his own community.

Dark Angel

Plot: Houston vice cop is after a drug kingpin when a drug dealer from space arrives…
KBZ’s Take: Better known as I Come in Peace, this is a film where we would have given anything to be in the initial pitch session – “A cop deals with an alien drug dealer who can only get high by sucking the brains out of his victims. Plus, he has this cool spinning weapon that looks like a CD that can cut people’s throats.” This is by no means a great film as the acting is bad, it’s low budget and it uses quite a few police and drug dealers’ clichés. However, it’s also campy and a lot of fun with a very original premise. Must see for fans of the Drugs & Narcos Film subgenre, Sci-Fi Bad Alien subgenre and early 90’s craziness.

Plot: After the murder of his wife, a man turns to crystal meth and hangs out with speed addicts.
KBZ’s Take: Probably one of the better performances by Val Kilmer. While the film plays like a Tarantino-directed Neo Noir film, the film’s memorable characters help it rise above similar ‘lost in a haze of addiction’ drug-themed films. Vincent D’Onofrio is the most memorable character as a crazy drug dealer without a nose but it’s Peter Saarsgard as Jimmy the Finn who provides the emotional backbone to the story. A depressing film with spurts of dark comedy that follows a man’s struggle for redemption and revenge.

City of God

Plot: Two kids in the slums of Rio grow up on different paths – one as a photographer and the other as a drug kingpin.
KBZ’s Take: We know the first thing people are going to say is, “How is City of God an unseen film? It’s one of the best films of all time!” And we agree 100%. However, there are a surprising number of people who have not seen this film due to the film’s native Portuguese language requiring English subtitles to watch or that it is now 20 years old and lost among the growing number of Drugs & Narcos Films released since 2002. Either way, it’s a film that must be seen as it’s a classic film of the subgenre and one of the top films of all time.
