In this seventh special edition KBZ article, we’re going to review the best horror films by decade for your Halloween movie night. We’ll select the best and scariest films from the 1970’s up to the most recent horror films from 2023.
These articles will act as more detailed companion articles to our previous Halloween articles which covered some lesser-known horror films to watch on Halloween. Our article on the Top Scariest Halloween Films for Adults You Haven’t Seen covered a mix of obscure and bone chilling horror while also breaking down some recommended horror films by popular horror subgenres. And we also have a list of the Top Scariest Halloween Films For Kids You Haven’t Seen if you’re looking for some tamer scares for various age groups.
This seventh article will cover the Best Horror Films of 2021 for Halloween and you can view articles as we release them from the list below:
- The Best 1970’s Horror Films for Halloween
- The Best 1980’s Horror Films for Halloween
- The Best 1990’s Horror Films for Halloween
- The Best 2000’s Horror Films for Halloween
- The Best 2010’s Horror Films for Halloween
- The Best Horror Films of 2020 for Halloween
- The Best Horror Films of 2021 for Halloween
- The Best Horror Films of 2022 for Halloween
- The Best Horror Films of 2023 for Halloween
For our rankings we’re going to use some criteria to help define and refine our list. First, we’re going to rank each film by how scary it is (and is known for). Though how ‘scary’ a film might be is subjective and older films might not be deemed scary by today’s standards, there are quite a few films that even decades later, will have you cringing in fear.
Second, we aren’t going to cover every sequel of every horror franchise out there. Horror is known for milking a franchise as much as possible with often increasingly subpar films. Unless a sequel or reboot is worth noting, we’ll be focusing on the initial iterations of these horror classics.
Third, we’ll try to make sure at least one film from every year per decade is included. Decades such as the 1980’s were top heavy with the amount of horror films released in the first half of the decade compared to the latter half.
And fourth, we had to follow our rule for all of KBZ’s film listings where we only list films that have a 4.0/10 or higher rating. We’re also only considering films released after 1970.
Our complete list of Horror Films for Halloween features over 167+ films from 1931 – 2023 and this is a good staring point if you’re looking for some of the best and classic Halloween Horror recommendations. And if you’ve seen most of the films on this list, we also have various articles reviewing the best obscure films by subgenre including the Best Body Horror films, the Best Space Horror Films, the Best Films about Ghosts and Hauntings, the Top Dark Fantasy Films and so on. Bloody Hell

Plot: A man with a mysterious past flees the country to escape his own personal hell, only to arrive somewhere much, much worse.
Horror Subgenre(s): Survival Horror Films
KBZ’s Take: If action-packed horror comedy is your thing, then there’s no better selection for Halloween Night than Bloody Hell. The film features equal parts comedy and horror with some surprising twists during the end. What also makes the film work is the amazing direction of Alister Grierson, a very original script (with some nods to horror classics) from Robert Benjamin and a great performance from Ben O’Toole.

#9
The Seed

Plot: What starts out as girls weekend away in the Mojave desert becomes a tale of horror, death and alien invasion.
Horror Subgenre(s): Horror Comedies, Body Horror Films
KBZ’s Take: We had put off watching this film for a while due to somewhat negative reviews and that it seemed to be more comedy than horror. Wow were we wrong. Not only for putting the film off but also for listening to some of the negative reviews of the film. This film is definitely one of the better Body Horror and Alien Invasion films that has come out from the last few years and a great bloody and disturbing pick for Halloween Night Horror.

Plot: An immigrant in search of the American dream is forced to take a room in a boarding house and soon finds herself in a nightmare from which she can’t escape.
Horror Subgenre(s): Folk Horror Films, Films About The Paranormal, Ghosts & Hauntings
KBZ’s Take: We were honestly surprised that this film currently only has a rating of 5.4/10 on IMDb. It was by far one of the better horror films we’ve seen in the last few years, and we’ve seen quite a few of them. This is a good slow burn and creepy film with a very unsettling third act that most horror fans will enjoy. You’ll just need to be patient until the scares (and monster) reveal themselves.

#7
Lamb

Plot: An Icelandic couple live with their herd of sheep on a beautiful but remote farm. When they discover a mysterious newborn on their land, they decide to keep it and raise it as their own. This unexpected development and the prospects of a new family brings them much joy before ultimately destroying them.
Subgenre(s): Folk Horror Films, World Cinema Horror Films
KBZ’s Take: This film takes its time getting to the mid-film reveal and the even more surprising third act twist, but you will be rewarded if you are patient. It’s a very unique and disturbing film of the Folk Horror subgenre and the slower moments of the film are carried by the main leads in Noomi Rapace and Hilmir Snær Guðnason. If you like Dark Fantasy with a Folk Horror twist, there aren’t many better recent horror films than Lamb.

#6
Antlers

Plot: A young teacher discovers that her troubled student s father and younger brother harbor a deadly supernatural secret. Taking the boy into her care, the teacher must fight for their survival against horrors beyond imagination.
Horror Subgenre(s): Folk Horror Films, Films About The Paranormal, Ghosts & Hauntings
KBZ’s Take: Antlers is much more of a Folk Horror film than Supernatural Horror. But the film is able to balance elements of both subgenres for one of the more effective (and scary) horror films from the last few years. If you’re a fan of Wendigo folklore such as Dark Was the Night (2014) and other Folk Horror such as The Ritual (2017), then this is one of the more recent scarier films you shouldn’t miss.

#5
The Cursed

Plot: In the late 19th century, locals suspect a wild animal is murdering people.
Horror Subgenre(s): Gothic Horror Films, Films About Werewolves
KBZ’s Take: Films About Werewolves are one of the classic themes of the Dark Fantasy subgenre and The Cursed is one of the more unique Werewolf movies you’ll find. We can’t say much about the Werewolf itself, but the film is much more a Dark Fantasy fable involving a curse thrust upon a brutal land baron by the gypsies he slaughters. If you’re a fan of lycanthrope horror, The Cursed is the best recent film about Werewolves.

Plot: A woman with a mysterious illness is forced into action when a group of terrorists attempt to hijack a transatlantic overnight flight. In order to protect her son she will have to reveal a dark secret, and unleash the inner monster she has fought to hide.
Horror Subgenre(s): Films About Vampires
KBZ’s Take: Now this is how you do a “Vampire loose on a plane” film. Though the flashbacks scenes bog the film down and one of the terrorists overacts a bit (you’ll know who), action and suspense abound in this latest Vampire tale. Very original, very pro-vampire and one of the bloodier films you can watch on Hallow’s Eve.

Where to Stream / Buy: Netflix

Plot: In 1994, a group of teenagers discovers that the terrifying events which have haunted their town for generations are all connected and that they may be the next targets.
Horror Subgenre(s): Slasher Films
KBZ’s Take: We’re listing the first film here but Fear Street: 1978 (2021) and Fear Street: 1666 (2021) are also good and all three films make up one of the best slasher trilogies of the early 20’s. We’re not sure if you’ll be able to fit all of the films in during one night’s viewing, but the first film is great on its own for a Slasherific Halloween.
Where to Stream / Buy: Netflix

Plot: A young girl, passionate about fashion design, is mysteriously able to enter the 1960’s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960’s London is not what it seems, and time seems to be falling apart with shady consequences.
Horror Subgenre(s): Psychological Horror Films, Slasher Films
KBZ’s Take: This is a Time Travel Film, Slasher Film, Mystery Thriller and Musical all rolled into one. What Edgar Wright did for the Zombie subgenre with Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Chase Action subgenre with Baby Driver (2017), he has done again with this amazing film that breathes new life into the Time Travel subgenre. It’s flown a bit under the radar due to Covid-19, but this should be moved to the top of your streaming queue right away. It’s an abnormal pick for Halloween Night but one you won’t be disappointed after watching.

#1
Malignant

Plot: Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.
Horror Subgenre(s): Body Horror Films, Psychological Horror Films, Slasher Films
KBZ’s Take: James Wan is the current king of horror with the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring film franchises. He has transformed various horror subgenres with unique themes and shocking scares, and he does the same with the Slasher Film subgenre in Malignant. This is one scary film with one of the most demented ‘twists’ in the history of horror. By the time you get to the third act, you’ll be wondering how much terrifying and crazy the film can get. If you want some guaranteed scares on Halloween, Malignant is a film you won’t ever forget.
