The 25 Raunchiest Romantic Comedies. In this special series of Valentine’s Day articles, we’ll be looking at the most romantic films across two different romance-related subgenres. These will be some of the best films we’ve come across that couples can enjoy together on the upcoming romantic holiday. And if you don’t have a loved one to share these films with, they’re still great films to keep you optimistic that the love of your life is right around the corner.
This second article will look at the 25 Raunchiest Romantic Comedies. If a film is raunchy, it generally means it’s for adults only, is often centered around sexual situations and contains nudity and foul language. Many romantic comedies that delve into the raunchy realm are some of the most uproarious and funniest comedies out there and make great selections for Valentine’s Day date night.
So, join us as we look at some of these raunchy romantic comedies from Judd Apatow’s string of rom-com raunch in The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), Knocked Up (2007) & Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) to a recent resurgence of adult-themed romantic comedies including No Hard Feelings (2023), Anyone But You (2023) & Sweethearts (2024).
Before we delve into our list below, we have included some additional articles and links we think you also might be interested in for Valentine’s Day:

For our rankings we’re going to use some criteria to help define and refine our list. First, the film must first and foremost be a romantic comedy. There are quite a few raunchy comedies with underlying romantic themes and subplots from Diner (1982) to Superbad (2007) but these films are primarily Buddy Comedies so won’t make this specific list. This rule will also apply to the various Films About Reunions that include bachelor and bachelorette parties from Bachelor Party (1984) to Bridesmaids (2011).
Second, the film must include raunchy elements from sexual situations to foul language that would make your parents blush. Most of these films will be for adults only with an R rating, but we will make a few exceptions for PG-13 films that include raunchy elements and toe the line between adult and teen-friendly fare. An example here would be the numerous Adam Sandler raunchy romantic comedies such as The Wedding Singer (1998), Just Go with It (2011) and 50 First Dates (2004). Many of Sandler’s rom-coms feature ‘raunch lite’ elements to retain a PG-13 rating. However, it would be criminal to not include one of these films on our list.
Third, the raunchier a film, the higher it will rank. In this instance, Good Luck Chuck (2007) will rank higher than Anyone But You (2023) as the former is much raunchier than the latter.
Fourth, we’re going to have to make some judgment calls on the numerous Coming-of-Age Teen Comedies that have romantic elements. A film like American Pie (1999) won’t be on this list but a film such as Eight Days a Week (1997) will make it since Peter’s (Joshua Shaefer) pursuit of Erica (Keri Russell) is the main plot of the film.
And fifth, we had to follow our rule for all of KBZ’s film listings where we only list films that have a 4.0/10 or higher rating and were released after 1970.
Our complete list of Raunchy Comedies includes over 643+ films from 1968 – 2024 and you’ll find every adult-themed comedy there including the raunchiest romantic comedies from our list below. The 25 Raunchiest Romantic Comedies
Honorable Mentions: Puberty Blues (1981), Secret Admirer (1985), My Chauffeur (1986), Casual Sex? (1988), Skin Deep (1989), Loverboy (1989), Trojan War (1997), The Opposite of Sex (1998), The Sweetest Thing (2002), Seeing Other People (2004), The Oh in Ohio (2006), Cashback (2006), It’s a Boy Girl Thing (2006), Sex and the City (2008), The French Kissers (2009), Bachelorette (2012), Miss Change (2013), Don Jon (2013), Someone Marry Barry (2014), Date and Switch (2014), The Little Death (2014), Palm Swings (2017), Jexi (2019), Sex Appeal (2022), Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022), Bros (2022), The End of Sex (2023) and Sweethearts (2024).
Special Mention: The recently released Anora (2024) is considered a raunchy and gritty romantic comedy with themes similar to Pretty Woman (1990). However, unlike Pretty Woman, it’s not as comedic and upbeat. It is an amazing film and one we highly recommend. You can rent the film on Amazon here.

Plot: When he starts dating drop-dead gorgeous Molly, insecure airport security agent Kirk can’t believe it. As his friends and family share their doubts about the relationship lasting, Kirk does everything he can to avoid losing Molly forever.
KBZ’s Take: She’s Out of My League takes the ‘nerdy guy with supermodel’ film trope and flips it on its head. There are some genuinely laugh out loud scenes in this film and it does a great job of balancing the female point of view of Molly (Alice Eve) with Kirk’s (Jay) never-ending male insecurities.

Plot: New York City is full of lonely hearts seeking the right match, and what Alice, Robin, Lucy, Meg, Tom and David all have in common is the need to learn how to be single in a world filled with ever-evolving definitions of love.
KBZ’s Take: There were many female-focused raunchy romantic comedies to choose from but most of the films involved primary themes of a bachelorette party. It ultimately came down to where How to Be Single would rank against a film such as Trainwreck (2015).
We picked How to Be Single for this slot as it has a great ensemble cast with Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson, Leslie Mann and Alison Brie and explores various relationship issues from both gender perspectives in its own raunchy way. Though it is a female-focused film, it’s also a film men will enjoy.

Plot: Can two serial cheaters get a second chance at love? After a one-night stand in college, New Yorkers Lainey and Jake meet by chance twelve years later and discover they each have the same problem: because of their monogamy-challenged ways, neither can maintain a relationship. Determined to stay friends despite their mutual attraction, they make a pact to keep it platonic, a deal that proves easier said than done.
KBZ’s Take: Sleeping with Other People has the least amount of overt raunchiness on our list as the raunchy situations mostly occur through dialogue between Jake (Jason Sudeikis) and Lainey (Alison Brie). It’s also a film that delves much deeper into relationship issues than other films on our list.
With all that said, it’s a great film that couples will enjoy and is great for single people (who might not yet be aware that their friend of the opposite sex might, in fact, be the one).

Plot: John and his buddy, Jeremy are emotional criminals who know how to use a woman’s hopes and dreams for their own carnal gain. Their modus operandi: crashing weddings. Normally, they meet guests who want to toast the romantic day with a random hook-up. But when John meets Claire, he discovers what true love – and heartache – feels like.
KBZ’s Take: The first Buddy Comedy on our list that we absolutely had to include in our Top 10 due to the film’s novel premise and shift to a romance in the second and third acts. Some of the raunchy romantic comedy scenes are the best in the subgenre and perfect for a laughter-filled date night on Valentine’s Day.

#6
Knocked Up

Plot: For fun loving party animal Ben Stone, the last thing he ever expected was for his one night stand to show up on his doorstep eight weeks later to tell him she’s pregnant.
KBZ’s Take: It’s hard to fully appreciate Judd Apatow’s influence on the subgenre. Throughout the 2000’s, he not only created the most popular raunchy romantic comedies of the decade, but his influence also steered the direction of the subgenre’s themes away from male dominated points of view to a better balance of both male and female perspectives.
This is evident in the first of Apatow’s films to make our Top 10 with Knocked Up. The film excels in showing the balanced viewpoints of a pregnancy from both Ben (Seth Rogen) and Allison’s (Katherine Heigl) viewpoints. And it wouldn’t be an Apatow film without his trademarked raunchy comedy (even during an actual birth) which the film has from start to finish.

Plot: Ambitious high schooler falls for his new neighbor – unaware that she used to be a porn star.
KBZ’s Take: Though it is primarily a Coming-of-Age Comedy, The Girl Next Door is also one of the few subgenre films that also puts an emphasis on the romance between a teen and the object of his desire. In this case, an adult porn star.
This is one of the raunchier films on our list as it deals with the porn industry and has sexual situations throughout the film. It is basically an updated version of Risky Business (1983) with more comedy and raunchiness but also with a message of seeing a person for who they are vs. what they do.

Plot: Andy Stitzer has a pleasant life with a nice apartment and a job stamping invoices at an electronics store. But at age 40, there’s one thing Andy hasn’t done, and it’s really bothering his sex-obsessed male co-workers: Andy is still a virgin. Determined to help Andy get laid, the guys make it their mission to de-virginize him. But it all seems hopeless until Andy meets small business owner Trish, a single mom.
KBZ’s Take: Our second Apatow film in our Top 10 is also a Buddy Comedy that eventually shifts to a romantic comedy between Andy (Steve Carell) and Trish (Catherine Keener). It’s also a film where Apatow regulars including Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd make an appearance before headlining their own raunchy romantic comedies later in the decade.
As for the film itself, it perfectly balances raunchiness with romance with Carell’s performance elevating the film. His sweet and endearing (yet clueless) Andy character makes the eventual raunchy comedy that much funnier when it happens.

Plot: On the brink of losing her childhood home, a desperate woman agrees to date a wealthy couple’s introverted and awkward 19-year-old son. However, he proves to be more of a challenge than she expected, and time is running out before she loses it all.
KBZ’s Take: There were two recent high profile raunchy romantic comedies with No Hard Feelings and Anyone But You (2023). Though Anyone But You is the more romantic film, No Hard Feelings is by far the more raunchier of the two.
The film does tackle coming-of-age issues but takes the perspective of this theme from older Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence). Her ‘romance for hire’ with Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) is the heart of the film but it’s Lawrence’s performance during some of the raunchier slapstick comedy scenes that steals the show.
This is a very, very funny film with a heart of gold and highly recommended for some non-stop laughter over the Valentine’s Day weekend.

Plot: When Sarah Marshall dumps aspiring musician Peter Bretter for rock star Aldous Snow, Peter’s world comes crashing down. His best friend suggests that Peter should get away from everything and to fly off to Hawaii to escape all his problems. After arriving in Hawaii and meeting the beautiful Rachel Jansen, Peter is shocked to see not only Aldous Snow in Hawaii, but also Sarah Marshall.
KBZ’s Take: Though the film is not directed by Apatow, he was a producer on the film and his fingerprints are all over Peter’s (Jason Segel) raunchy, romantic and comedic journey. And while Segel gives a standout performance in the film, there are also some unforgettable characters from a cast including Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, Russell Brand and Bill Hader.
Like other Apatow ‘raunch rom-coms’ of the decade, there’s also the balanced view from both gender perspectives – in this case it’s a couple’s breakup. But only Apatow could turn the grieving process of a breakup into one of the funniest (and raunchiest) films of the subgenre.
Note: We also wanted to call out Nicholas Stoller who directed the film. This film was his directorial debut and he would go one to direct some of the raunchiest comedies over the next two decade with Get Him to the Greek (2010), Neighbors (2014) and Bros (2022).

Plot: For Ted, prom night went about as bad as possible for any night to go. Thirteen years later, he finally gets another chance with his old prom date, only to run up against other suitors including the sleazy detective he hired to find her.
KBZ’s Take: 27 years later, There’s Something About Mary still retains the crown as the funniest and raunchiest romantic comedy. While the Farrelly Brothers had explored some romantic underpinnings in raunchy classics Dumb and Dumber (1994) and Kingpin (1996), Mary was a romantic comedy first with a level of raunchiness only the Farrelly’s could provide.
The film is filled with raunchy and crass humor that was politically incorrect for its time (and even more so now). But the comedy somehow works due to the unbelievable (yet hysterical) romance between Ted (Ben Stiller) and Mary (Cameron Diaz). This romantic pursuit of Mary is made even funnier by supporting characters Pat (Matt Dillon) and Tucker (Lee Evans).
It’s a film filled with classic rom-com moments with the raunchiest situations possible from Ted’s unfortunate zipper incident to Mary discovering Ted’s ‘hair gel’. And while the film might not have you rediscovering your love for your partner in life, it will leave you both teary eyed from non-stop laughter.
