The holiday season is here and with that means our second article in a special series of Christmas-themed films. Last year we looked at the raunchiest comedies of the Christmas season, fantasy films where people live an alternate life during the holidays and the scariest Christmas horror films from 2020 – 2023. This year we’ve already posted about the best Christmas action and crime films and we’ll now look at the most beloved Christmas classic of all time, A Christmas Carol.
Written by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol has come to epitomize the themes of the Christmas holiday from caring and sharing with others over personal selfishness and greed. The book also helped popularize “Merry Christmas!” as a greeting and brought to life one of the most iconic characters of the Christmas holiday in Ebenezer Scrooge.
Since 1853, adaptations of A Christmas Carol have been numerous from public readings to theater and stage productions. In this second article, we’ll cover the Best Film Adaptations of a Christmas Carol and you can check out our other Christmas-themed articles for 2024 below:

For our rankings we’re going to use some criteria to help define and refine our list. First, we’re primarily going to cover Film and TV movie adaptations of the classic novel. Though some of these films have musical numbers, we won’t be covering specific musicals or theater productions of A Christmas Carol.
Second, our focus will be on live adaptations of Dickens’s tale though we will provide a list below of all the animated adaptations of A Christmas Carol (and we will create a list ranking these animated films in the future).
Third, we’re going to give priority to direct adaptations that stay as close as possible to the source novel. However, there are also many films that use variations of themes from A Christmas Carol that we’ll also consider for the list.
And fourth, we had to follow our rule for all of KBZ’s film listings where we only list films that have a 4.0/10 or higher rating and were released after 1970.
Our complete list of Christmas Movies features over 838+ films from 1946 – 2024. This collection features almost every film from every genre set during Christmas and other end of the year holidays.
