This is the seventh and final article where we’ll be covering The Best Cold War Films of All Time. Films About the Cold War involve the ‘Cold War’ period between the U.S. and Soviet Union from 1945 – 1991 and typically involve themes of Spies & Espionage, Double Agents, the CIA & KGB, the threat of Nuclear War & World War III and fears of Communism. Due to the 46-year period of the Cold War, many historical topics and events are also covered in this subgenre including the Korean War, the Soviet-Afghan War, the Berlin Wall, The Cuban Missile Crisis and other events involving direct or indirect U.S. and Soviet Union military or political confrontations. Though the Vietnam War also occurred during the Cold War and involved the U.S. and Soviet Union, due to the large number of films about Vietnam, we have an entirely separate subgenre dedicated specifically to Vietnam War Films.

For our rankings we’re going to use some criteria to help define and refine our list. First, we’re only going to focus on Cold War films made after 1970. We realize this will exclude some pre-1970 subgenre classics such as North by Northwest (1959), The Manchurian Candidate (1962), Seven Days in May (1964) and others but we want our list focused on modern era films. However, we will provide a list of all these pre-1970 classic films below.

Second, there are many themes and events found in Cold War films as the period covers approximately 46 years. For this list, we’re going to try and represent as many themes and events as we can, but the list will prioritize Cold War films featuring Spies and Espionage. Spy craft has always been the main underlying theme of the Cold War and has made for the most interesting and thrilling films. Films About the Space Race, McCarthyism and so on will also be represented but those are events of the Cold War that will likely require their own future lists.

Third, priority will be given to films that are primarily about, set during or set shortly after the Cold War. There are quite a few films that have some ancillary subplots involving the Cold War like Black Widow (2021) or cover obscure Cold War-era events like the 8888 Uprising in Burma in Beyond Rangoon (1995) so these types of films will be deprioritized in our rankings.

Fourth, we’re also going to deprioritize any James Bond films. There are many Bond films that have themes of the Cold War and are set during this period of time, but like some other subjects of the Cold War, they will be better served with their own, unique list in the future.

Fifth, we want to include films from every decade between 1970 and 2020 so every decade is represented. As a result, you likely won’t see some popular and classic Cold War films from the 1980’s and 2000’s on our list as both of those decades had a higher amount of subgenre films relative to other decades. However, these films will be listed in our Honorable Mentions section below so be sure to reference that list if you’re just getting into the subgenre and want to make sure you can check out all subgenre films worth seeing.

And sixth, as we mentioned above, we had to follow our rule for all of KBZ’s film listings where we only list films that have a 4.0/10 or higher rating and were released after 1970.

Our complete list of Cold War Films features over 229+ films from 1951 – 2023. This collection features almost every film involving Spies & Espionage, The Korean War, The Berlin Wall and other historical events occurring during the Cold War period. If you don’t see a film in our collection, it might not be set during the Cold War or is likely in our lists of Films About Spies & Espionage, Conspiracy Thrillers, Historical Biopics and Historical Event Films. Also, if you’re just starting to get into films and themes about The Cold War, we have a previous list of The Top Films About the Cold War You Haven’t Seen which is an overview of some of the lesser-known films of the subgenre. For these lists, we’ve gone much more in depth into Cold War film subgenre so subscribe to our newsletter to get updated as we release subsequent lists for some of the unique Cold War events we mentioned above.

    Top Gun

Best Cold War Films of All Time

Plot: For Lieutenant Pete Maverick Mitchell and his friend and co-pilot Nick Goose Bradshaw, being accepted into an elite training school for fighter pilots is a dream come true. But a tragedy, as well as personal demons, will threaten Pete’s dreams of becoming an ace pilot.

KBZ’s Take: While mainly a recruiting video for the U.S. Navy, Top Gun was also a Cold War film in disguise. From the fictional MiG-28’s to the unnamed war adversary throughout the film, Top Gun infers it’s the Russians while never explicitly mentioning or showing them. This generalization of the enemy has helped the film age well compared to other Cold War films made before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Though it doesn’t have the spy craft most associated with the subgenre, it’s still one of the best action-packed films of the era with an arguably even better sequel in Top Gun: Maverick (2022).

    The Courier

Best Cold War Films of All Time

Plot: Cold War spy Greville Wynne and his Russian source try to put an end to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

KBZ’s Take: Benedict Cumberbatch is quickly becoming the king of period-themed Historical Biopics with his roles as Richard III (2016), Alan Turing in The Imitation Game (2016) and Thomas Edison in The Current War (2017). Though he also had a role (as a fictional character) in one of the better Cold War spy films, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2013), it’s his performance in The Courier that makes it one of the best films of the subgenre.

Unlike more recent Cold War films, this is a film that squarely harkens back to an era of suspense-driven Cold War Spy films such as North by Northwest (1959), Enigma (1983) and The Falcon and the Snowman (1985). That the film is based on a true (and incredulous) event makes it a film no fan of the subgenre should miss.

    Crimson Tide

Best Cold War Films of All Time

Plot: On a US nuclear missile sub, a young first officer stages a mutiny to prevent his trigger-happy captain from launching his missiles before confirming his orders to do so.

KBZ’s Take: One of the few Cold War films that takes place after the fall of the Soviet Union with Russian nationalists as the primary enemy. However, though the film has many suspenseful moments between the USS Alabama and Russian Akula-class submarines, it’s mainly about misinformation in the nuclear age with XO Hunter (Denzel Washington) and CO Ramsey (Gene Hackman) pitted against one another.

It’s one of the better subgenre films that highlights Cold War military philosophy and command structure subject to various interpretations. And if you enjoyed this film about how close the world comes to a Nuclear War, The Man Who Saved the World (2014) is a documentary about a Soviet officer in 1983 who also defied protocol and saved the world from Armageddon.

    #7
    Buffalo Soldiers

Best Cold War Films of All Time

Plot: A criminal subculture operates amongst U.S. soldiers stationed in West Germany just before the fall of the Berlin wall.

KBZ’s Take: This is a film we wanted to highlight in more detail for this specific list. It’s one of our favorite films and similar in spirt to Three Kings (2001) yet much, much darker. This film doesn’t fit into any one genre – it’s a Black Comedy, Satire, Caper and Heist Film, War Drama and Psychological Thriller all rolled into one.

While it’s set towards the end of the Cold War, it’s very different than any other film from the decade. It doesn’t delve into the usual tropes of the subgenre but rather focuses on a warped theme of capitalism emerging and thriving in West Germany – even on a military base. Weapons, drugs, cleaning supplies – anything is for sale for the right cost.

The film is also about competing views of the military told in a dark, satirical manner. There’s the enterprising Elwood (Joaquin Phoenix) who eventually meets the hard-nosed, Vietnam vet commander brought in as the new First Sergeant (Scott Glenn). Their escalating feud is dark, entertaining and one of the best you’ll see in any subgenre.

The film’s release was delayed by the events of 9/11 and at the time, a satirical view of America’s military wasn’t in vogue. But over time, the film has developed into a cult classic and one of the best satires of the Cold War.

    Balloon

Best Cold War Films of All Time

Plot: Following the crossing of the inner German border by the families Strelzyk and Wetzel from the GDR to West Germany in the summer of 1979. Desperate to leave the GDR, they flee in a homemade hot-air balloon.

KBZ’s Take: Balloon is one of the best and most suspenseful films of the entire subgenre. Based on the unbelievable true story of the Strelzyk and Wetzel families and their attempts to escape East Berlin via hot-air balloon. If the story sounds familiar, it’s because a previous film starring John Hurt and Beau Bridges, called Night Crossing (1982), was about the same families and events.

While Night Crossing is a decent film adaptation of the event, it doesn’t hold up to the recent and much more suspenseful German film. Balloon grips you from its first moments and is a suspense-filled experience from beginning to end. It’s a film where you’re constantly on the edge of your seat whether its during the families dangerous escape attempts or the growing threat of being caught by an omniscient Statsi presence from their neighborhood to East Berlin itself.

The division of West Berlin and East Berlin (and the subsequent fall of the wall) is one of the most defining moments of the Cold War. Few films have adequately captured life in East Berlin and why so many people tried to escape it. Balloon excels in character development where you get to know the families, their desperation and why they risk everything for a better life.

Balloon is one of those rare films that we not only highly recommend for fans of the subgenre, but for moviegoers in general. It’s that good of a film and one that you’ll be glad you’ve seen.

    Harrison’s Flowers

Best Cold War Films of All Time

Plot: 1991. Harrison Lloyd, a renowned photojournalist covering the war in Yugoslavia, is reported missing. Sarah, his wife, convinced that he is not dead, decides to go to Bosnia to find him.

KBZ’s Take: Harrison’s Flowers was #1 on our Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen list and #2 on our list of the Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen 2000’s. This is the “best film with worst title” you’ll ever see. Why it’s named Harrison’s Flowers is anybody’s guess but this is one brutal war film. Set in the midst of the Yugoslavian War, the film depicts the horror of ethnic genocide throughout the ravaged country.

It’s also the best film that shows how difficult it is to escape from a war zone even under the neutral banner of the press. This is an A+ film with an excellent cast including Andie MacDowell, Adrien Brody, Brendan Gleeson, David Strathairn, Elias Koteas and Gerard Butler.

    The Falcon and the Snowman

Best Cold War Films of All Time

Plot: Two middle class youths become spies for Russia.

KBZ’s Take: Of all the subgenre films from the 80’s, we’ve always felt The Falcon and the Snowman best portrays the realistic methods of espionage during the Cold War. It’s also a film that delves into the politics of America, one man’s disillusionment with his government’s actions and how he and his friend get way in over their head with international espionage.

The film is based on the true story of Christopher Boyce (Timothy Hutton) and Andrew Daulton Lee (Sean Penn) who devise a plan to steal classified documents from Boyce’s workplace at a defense contractor and sell them to the Soviets. From there the film details their contact with the Soviet embassy in Mexico and the growing predicament they find themselves in with KBG agents.

Penn and Hutton carry the film, and both give career performances as the amateur spies. It’s also a film filled with suspense from Boyce’s initial attempt to steal a classified document in the presence of co-workers to the Soviet’s increasing distrust of the unstable Lee.

The 80’s were a period of so many classic Cold War Films, it’s hard to pick just one. But if there’s one film we could recommend based on realistic espionage of the time that’s based on true (but almost unbelievable) events, it would be The Falcon and the Snowman.

    #3
    Firefox

Best Cold War Films of All Time

Plot: Ex-Vietnam War pilot is sent to the Soviet Union to steal a revolutionary new jet fighter called Firefox.

KBZ’s Take: Firefox was #1 on our Top Films About Spies & Espionage You Haven’t Seen and #2 on our list of the Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen – 1980’s. The reasons we listed it there are also applicable for our #3 slot here:

#1 – The Nostalgic Factor. This was a film almost every Gen X’er grew up with and loved. Though the film’s flight scenes and special effects are very dated by today’s standards, the first-person view of the Firefox dogfights was classic cinema at the time.

#2 – It’s Clint Eastwood as a Spy. While this film has an action-packed third act, the first two acts of the film are even better as a pure Spy & Espionage film. Yes, the film would have been better without the traumatic flashbacks to Vietnam by Clint’s character, but the numerous suspenseful sequences will have you on the edge of your seat.

#3 – Firefox became a kick-ass Arcade Game. Kids nowadays won’t know the true feeling of an old school arcade and coming upon one of the first laserdisc Arcade Games. Dragon’s Lair and games like Firefox completely changed the game from the 8-bit games early 80’s kids were accustomed to. It featured actual scenes from the movie that you could play in – which was unthinkable at the time. Here’s some video of the actual Firefox arcade gameplay that will have you longing for the old days.

Firefox is a bit of a forgotten 80’s classic but we highly recommend it for fans of the subgenre and for younger fans who enjoy suspenseful Cold War Espionage Films (and don’t mind dated CGI).

    WarGames

Best Cold War Films of All Time

Plot: High School student David Lightman has a talent for hacking. But while trying to hack into a computer system to play unreleased video games, he unwittingly taps into the Defense Department’s war computer and initiates a confrontation of global proportions. Together with his girlfriend and a wizardly computer genius, David must race against time to outwit his opponent and prevent a nuclear Armageddon.

KBZ’s Take: It’s easy to dismiss WarGames as one of the many teen-oriented films that flooded theaters in the early 80’s. While it does have a teen cast with Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy, the film takes a unique Cold War view of the rise of technology, artificial intelligence and the military.

The film will always be immortalized by WOPR’s (War Operation Plan Response) voice synthesized query of “Shall We Play a Game?”, but it’s horrific look into the military’s handing over control of world-ending weapons to a computer is only rivaled by Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970).

    #1
    Red Dawn

Best Cold War Films of All Time

Plot: It is the dawn of World War III. In mid-western America, a group of teenagers band together to defend their town and their country from invading Soviet forces.

KBZ’s Take: Released during the tail end of the Cold War, Red Dawn envisions an alternate history where NATO has disbanded, and Russia and Cuba launch a surprise attack on the U.S.

Though the film’s plot doesn’t seem plausible (especially today), nuclear war tensions between the U.S. and Soviet Union were heightened during the early 80’s. The sequence of Russian paratroopers landing on a school’s football field was featured in trailers of the film and tapped into U.S. moviegoers’ Cold War anxieties like similar films of the time such as The Day After (1984).

While the remake Red Dawn (2012) updated the invasion forces to a more current U.S. nemesis in North Korea, it couldn’t quite capture the magic of the first film’s gritty alternate history.
