This is the fourth in a series of articles where we’ll be covering Cold War Films. Films About the Cold War involve the ‘Cold War’ period between the U.S. and Soviet Union from 1945 – 1991 and typically involve themes of Spies & Espionage, Double Agents, the CIA & KGB, the threat of Nuclear War & World War III and fears of Communism. Due to the 46-year period of the Cold War, many historical topics and events are also covered in this subgenre including the Korean War, the Soviet-Afghan War, the Berlin Wall, The Cuban Missile Crisis and other events involving direct or indirect U.S. and Soviet Union military or political confrontations. Though the Vietnam War also occurred during the Cold War and involved the U.S. and Soviet Union, due to the large number of films about Vietnam, we have an entirely separate subgenre dedicated specifically to Vietnam War Films.

This fourth article will cover the Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen from the 2000’s and you can check out additional articles by decade below. We are also going to include a Best Of subgenre article as a grand finale. There are so many great Cold War films over the last 70 years that we felt it best to break down some of the subgenre’s forgotten and lesser-known gems by decade before we give you the Best Of list which will likely feature many films you’ve already heard of or have seen.

Just as the previous decade had ended with a slew of films about the Yugoslav War, the early 2000’s saw a continuation of this brutal ethnic war depicted in film. Another prominent theme of this decade included the Cold War era of Germany and the lives of citizens in both West Germany and East Germany. Cold War Films about Spies & Espionage also continued as a major theme of the subgenre (like in previous decades), but the 2000’s saw one major theme develop – the battle of Democracy vs. Communism.

Though the Cold War had always been about the West’s efforts to control the spread of Soviet-sponsored Communism throughout the world, the 2000’s saw a variety of films that depicted the battle between democratic and communist ideologies. Democratic South Korea and Communist North Korea were the forces pitted against each other in Korea’s demilitarized zone (DMZ) of Joint Security Area (2000) and with a brutal depiction of brothers on opposites sides of the Korean War in Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood (2004). Two competing views of the Chinese Civil War and eventual adoption of Communism would be presented in China’s Assembly (2007) and Taiwan’s Prince of Tears (2009). Thirteen Days (2000), Che: Part One (2008) and Che: Part Two (2009) would all depict various efforts by the United States to prevent Communism from taking hold in Cuba. And even sporting events were not immune to this Cold War battle between the two global superpowers with Miracle (2004) following the underdog U.S. Men’s Hockey Team’s against the heavily favored Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics.

With the brutality of the Yugoslav War still resonating throughout the globe, a variety of films depicted various events from the infamous war. Harrison’s Flowers (2000) involved a wife’s journey into the heart of Bosnia during the war to find her missing journalist husband. A U.S. reconnaissance pilot shot down over Bosnia and trying to escape Serbian forces was featured in Behind Enemy Lines (2001). No Man’s Land (2001), by Bosnian director Danis Tanovic, would take a dark and satirical look at the futility of the war. And The Hunting Party (2007) would follow a team of journalists attempting to capture a Serbian war criminal shortly after the war.

Another infamous moment of the Cold War involved the separation of Germany into West-backed West Germany and Soviet-backed East Germany. Films from this decade covered various aspects of a divided Germany from the creation of the Berlin Wall and escape attempts by East Berlin citizens into West Berlin in The Tunnel (2000), a humorous look at the emergence of capitalism after the fall of the Berlin Wall in Good Bye Lenin! (2003) and a look at KGB-style spying of East German citizens in the classic subgenre film The Lives of Others (2006).

And as with other decades in the subgenre, Cold War-themed Films About Spies & Espionage continued into the 2000’s with Spy Game (2001), Agent of Influence (2002), Master Spy: The Robert Hanssen Story (2002), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), The Good Shepherd (2006), Breach (2007) and Farewell (2009).

Our complete list of Cold War Films features over 229+ films from 1951 – 2023. This collection features almost every film involving Spies & Espionage, The Korean War, The Berlin Wall and other historical events occurring during the Cold War period. If you don’t see a film in our collection, it might not be set during the Cold War or is likely in our lists of Films About Spies & Espionage, Conspiracy Thrillers, Historical Biopics and Historical Event Films. Here is our list of the Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen from the 2000’s:

    #10
Master Spy: The Robert Hanssen Story

Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen – 2000’s

Plot: The true story of Robert Hanssen who was a spy for Soviet intelligence which led to one of the worst intelligence disasters in U.S. history.

KBZ’s Take: This made-for-TV miniseries isn’t an action-packed spy extravaganza. Rather, it tells a more realistic and mundane tale of how a man deeply in debt, slowly starts to betray his country. The late William Hurt (Hanssen) gives a subdued performance as the man who lets greed get the best of him as he falls further into an espionage trap, he’ll never escape from. Recommended for fans of the subgenre.

    The Great Water

Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen – 2000’s

Plot: An ailing communist reflects on his childhood in Stalinist Yugoslavia.

KBZ’s Take: This film might be too slow for some viewers but it’s a unique Cold War Film that shows how communist indoctrination occurred in Macedonia shortly after World War II. It’s also a coming-of-age tale as the young Leon (Saso Kekenovski) is brought to an orphanage and undergoes ideological brainwashing.

The film has some sequences that are difficult (and heartbreaking) to watch, but it’s a recommended film of the subgenre that will help current generations understand better what was at stake in the Cold War.

    Farewell

Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen – 2000’s

Plot: An intricate thriller about an ordinary man thrust into the biggest theft of Soviet information of the Cold War. Right after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, a French businessman based in Moscow, Pierre Froment, makes an unlikely connection with Grigoriev, a senior KGB officer disenchanted with what the Communist ideal has become under Brezhnev. Grigoriev begins passing Froment highly sensitive information about the Soviet spy network in the U.S.

KBZ’s Take: If you enjoy dense and suspenseful Cold War spy films like The Looking Glass War (1970) and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), you’ll want to watch this film. It’s loosely based on KBG spy Vladimir Vetrov’s coordination with the French to pass along covert Soviet documents to the West.

Though it’s not a John le Carré adaptation, it involves much of the same intricate plot structure and characters as le Carré’s stories that require patience and attention to fully understand and appreciate. It’s one of the better Films About Spies & Espionage from the Cold War showing the Soviet side of intel breaches.

    9th Company

Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen – 2000’s

Plot: Russian army recruits complete training and take their posting in late 1980s Afghanistan, where the insurgents are slowly gaining the upper hand.

KBZ’s Take: Though the Cold War Film subgenre has films about the Korean War, Vietnam War and other proxy wars fought between the U.S. and Soviet Union, these films are mostly told from a Western point of view. The 9th Company is a Russian film showing the Soviet perspective of the Soviet-Afghan War as a group of new recruits are enlisted for battle against the western-backed Afghan mujahidin.

Though the film often gets compared to Platoon (1987), it doesn’t have a dominant anti-war message and is more focused on the brutality of war and its psychological effects on the combatants. And though the film has its propaganda-type moments like most war films, we still recommend it for fans of the subgenre looking for unique war perspectives.

    The Tunnel

Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen – 2000’s

Plot: Inspired by true events, Olympic swimmer Harry Melchior defects from East Germany in the 1960s and hatches a daring plot to help his sister and others flee East Berlin through a 145-yard underground tunnel.

KBZ’s Take: We’ve covered other films about the Berlin War in previous articles, but this is one of the best about the initial creation of the wall and its division of families and friends in Berlin. Based on Hasso Herschel’s efforts to create an underground tunnel between the divided Berlins, the film is a suspenseful and often harrowing look at the German tunnellers and the numerous risks they take to free their loved ones.

One of the interesting historical aspects of this film is with the involvement of America. However, it’s not the American government’s involvement but rather NBC which happened to be in West Berlin filming a movie at the time. In a fascinating twist of fate, NBC agreed to fund the tunnel team for exclusive rights of their tunneling and escape efforts.

It’s a fascinating film and one of the Cold War’s true-but-hard-to-believe tales that every subgenre fan should see.

    Good Bye, Lenin!

Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen – 2000’s

Plot: Alex Kerner’s mother was in a coma while the Berlin wall fell. When she wakes up he must try to keep her from learning what happened (as she was an avid communist supporter) to avoid shocking her which could lead to another heart attack.

KBZ’s Take: Very, very funny and heartwarming film about the lengths a son will go to keep up the illusion that communism still reigns in Berlin. The film features many slapstick moments of capitalism settling in much to the detriment of Daniel Brühl’s character who struggles to keep up the communist façade for his mother.

Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War

Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen – 2000’s

Plot: When two brothers are forced to fight in the Korean War, the elder decides to take the riskiest missions if it will help shield the younger from battle.

KBZ’s Take: Like 9th Company (2005), this film involves the Korean perspective of the Korean War and a family embroiled in the sudden and chaotic outbreak of conflict. The most apt comparison for this film would be Saving Private Ryan (1998) with its bridge between the present and past as it tells its tale of two brothers who eventually end up on opposite sides of the war.

There aren’t many films that have covered the Korean War and this film excels in showing the absolute brutality of that war. Its battle scenes are bloody, intense and some of the best of the Films with Massive Battle Scenes subgenre.

But at its core, it’s a film about family and the bond of brothers that’s tested through military indoctrination and increasingly difficult situations. It will resonate with you long after viewing and it’s one film that no fan of the subgenre should miss.

    The Lives of Others

Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen – 2000’s

Plot: A tragic love story set in East Berlin with the backdrop of an undercover Stasi controlled culture. Stasi captain Wieler is ordered to follow author Dreyman and plunges deeper and deeper into his life until he reaches the threshold of doubting the system.

KBZ’s Takee: Winner of the 2006 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, The Lives of Others excels in showing the dangers of the surveillance state. As a Cold War film, the tension is not created by separate entities and the threat of war but rather the residents against an increasingly corrupt and controlling state.

Other films set in East Germany during the Cold War have depicted the Stasi – East Germany’s version of the KGB. But no other film shows the psychological effects of being in the Stasi and its long-term effect on an individual long after Berlin’s reunification and the end of the Cold War.

    Harrison’s Flowers

Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen – 2000’s

Plot: 1991. Harrison Lloyd, a renowned photojournalist covering the war in Yugoslavia, is reported missing. Sarah, his wife, convinced that he is not dead, decides to go to Bosnia to find him.

KBZ’s Take: Harrison’s Flowers was #1 on our Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen list and we only moved it to #2 here so we could highlight another film from that list. This is the “best film with worst title” you’ll ever see. Why it’s named Harrison’s Flowers is anybody’s guess but this is one brutal war film. Set in the midst of the Yugoslavian War, the film depicts the horror of ethnic genocide throughout the ravaged country.

It’s also the best film that shows how difficult it is to escape from a war zone even under the neutral banner of the press. This is an A+ film with an excellent cast including Andie MacDowell, Adrien Brody, Brendan Gleeson, David Strathairn, Elias Koteas and Gerard Butler.

    #1
    Buffalo Soldiers

Top Cold War Films You Haven’t Seen – 2000’s

Plot: A criminal subculture operates amongst U.S. soldiers stationed in West Germany just before the fall of the Berlin wall.

KBZ’s Take: This is a film we wanted to highlight in more detail for this specific list. It’s one of our favorite films and similar in spirt to Three Kings (2001) yet much, much darker. This film doesn’t fit into any one genre – it’s a Black Comedy, Satire, Caper and Heist Film, War Drama and Psychological Thriller all rolled into one.

While it’s set towards the end of the Cold War, it’s very different than any other film from the decade. It doesn’t delve into the usual tropes of the subgenre but rather focuses on a warped theme of capitalism emerging and thriving in West Germany – even on a military base. Weapons, drugs, cleaning supplies – anything is for sale for the right cost.

The film is also about competing views of the military told in a dark, satirical manner. There’s the enterprising Elwood (Joaquin Phoenix) who eventually meets the hard-nosed, Vietnam vet commander brought in as the new First Sergeant (Scott Glenn). Their escalating feud is dark, entertaining and one of the best you’ll see in any subgenre.

The film’s release was delayed by the events of 9/11 and at the time, a satirical view of America’s military wasn’t in vogue. But over time, the film has developed into a cult classic and one of the best satires of the Cold War.
