Romantic Comedy-based Time Travel Films were some of the more prominent efforts released from 2010 – 2016 with Hot Tub Time Machine (2010), The Man from the Future (2011), Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) and About Time (2013). This time period also included some notable Time Travel films (that aren’t as well known) including Detention (2011), Sound of My Voice (2011), Time Lapse (2014), Predestination (2014) and Project Almanac (2015).
Our list of Time Travel Films includes over 190+ movies from 1960 – 2022. As we mentioned previously, if you don’t see a film on our list that you’re sure is Time Travel or related to the subgenre, it is likely in our lists of Time Loop Films, Alternate History Films and Contemporary and Urban Fantasy Films.

Plot: A scientist (Wagner Moura) goes back in time to prevent an embarrassing incident, but when he returns, he finds that he has made matters worse.
KBZ’s Take: The Man from the Future is more of a Romantic Comedy but the Time Travel aspects in the film are noteworthy. Like some films in the Time Travel subgenre that feature multiple instances of a Time Traveler interacting with his past self, this film takes it to more comedic lengths with multiple instances of the Time Traveler all arguing amongst themselves about the correct way to alter time while in the past. There’s also a slight twist at the end that wraps the film up nicely. Recommended for fans of the subgenre.

Time Lapse

Plot: Three friends discover a mysterious machine that takes pictures 24 hours into the future and conspire to use it for personal gain, until disturbing and dangerous images begin to develop.
KBZ’s Take: This is a great low budget film that tackles a unique issue with time in the subgenre. Are we predestined for a future fate or can the future be altered? That’s the theme this film tackles with Sci-Fi elements in the background and Mystery and Psychological thrills in the foreground. This is usually mentioned as one of the better Time Travel films of the last 20 years, but if you still haven’t seen it yet, it’s definitely worth a watch.

Plot: A journalist and his girlfriend get pulled in while they investigate a cult whose leader claims to be from the future.
KBZ’s Take: This film might be too slow for some fans of more action-packed Sci-Fi as it’s a more cerebral take on Time Travel itself. If a Time Traveler did appear from the future, would this person develop a cult following like the situation presented in the film. And what methods would a skeptic use to prove the Time Traveler was lying and just a con artist? While the film plays out as a Psychological Thriller and whether or not the cult leader is actually from the future, the ambiguous ending will have you thinking about the film long after it’s over.

Plot: Soo-hyun comes across magical pills that allow him to go back and forth in time. 30 years to the past, young Soo-hyun meets future Soo-hyun and learns that his girlfriend will soon die because of him. In order to save her, the two Soo-hyuns try to change the past together, but a completely new and unexpected past is formed that leads to a new future.
KBZ’s Take: One of the major tropes of the Time Travel subgenre is a Time Traveler going back in time to save a loved one by altering the past. Will You Be There takes this trope and expands on it in many unique and exciting ways. While the film itself is more of a Romantic Drama (and a very good one at that), it does look at themes of an altered future and if that’s actually the best outcome for everyone involved. Highly recommended film of the subgenre and one that makes a great date night movie.

Plot: After the disappearance of a young scientist on a business trip, his son and wife struggle to cope, only to make a bizarre discovery years later – one that may bring him home.
KBZ’s Take: While this film has mixed reviews from critics and film viewers, we still found it to be one of the more intriguing films of the subgenre. Admittedly, the film does bog down in the weeds with technical details of Time Travel and doesn’t resolve some plot holes with the trip back in time by Erol (Haley Joel Osment). However, it has a unique take on an ‘alternate’ timeline as a result of Time Travel and how the affected person in the alternate timeline becomes aware of their changed reality. If you can stick with the film until the third act, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how this film explores the genesis of the altered reality.

About Time

Plot: The night after another unsatisfactory New Year’s party, Tim’s father tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim can’t change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own life – so he decides to make his world a better place… by getting a girlfriend. Sadly, that turns out not to be as easy as he thinks.
KBZ’s Take: About Time has some truck-sized plot holes in the film (especially in the third act), but you’ll likely excuse those plot holes because of the wonderful journey in this film. There is hardly any Sci-Fi in this film and the Time Travel mechanism isn’t a very visual one, but it does explore some paradoxes of Time Travel and its resulting outcomes. Where the film shines is from the performances by Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel Adams and Bill Nighy. They give the film the necessary heart and humanity to look at family and relationships in an entirely different light due to Time Travel. Highly recommended film of the subgenre.

Plot: A group of teens discover secret plans of a time machine and construct one. However, things start to get out of control.
KBZ’s Take: Before writing this list, Project Almanac was one film of the subgenre we had been putting off due to mostly negative reviews. However, after finally watching the film, we thought it was one of the better Time Travel films to come out from 2010 – 2016. Part of the negative reaction to the film was the use of the Found Footage format and we’ll admit this takes away from the film itself. The other negative was that the film was geared towards a younger audience and lacking technical details on the machine and Time Travel. We’re in the camp that the technical details aren’t important (as Time Travel doesn’t exist anyway) and for younger audiences, this film is a great intro into the subgenre and all the paradoxes involved with changing the past.

Detention

Plot: As a killer named Cinderhella stalks the student body at the high school in Grizzly Lake, a group of co-eds band together to survive while they’re all serving detention.
KBZ’s Take: This was a bit of a controversial film for our #1 pick in our More Body Swap Films You Haven’t Seen list as it’s a film that isn’t about one subgenre or theme. It’s a Teen Comedy, Slasher Film, Time Travel Film and Body Swap Film all blended together for a strange yet fun experience. This film also has a very frenetic presentation with constant text on the screen and quick edits that might turn off older viewers. But in our opinion, the presentation helps augment the fast-paced life and thoughts of the teens in the film.
As for the Body Swap theme in the film, it involves one of the teens that has body swapped with her mother and the teens need to travel back in time to 1992 to stop the end of the world. It’s a convoluted plot but somehow works thanks to a very funny script and performances from Josh Hutcherson, Shanley Caswell and Spencer Locke. It’s not your typical Body Swap subgenre film but one that fans of the subgenre shouldn’t miss.

Plot: Time Travel agent must stop a criminal who is planning a devastating attack.
KBZ’s Take: Based on the Robert A. Heinlein Sci-Fi short story, All You Zombies, Predestination is one wild ride. This is a film you must pay attention to and will likely still have questions about once you get to the shocking final. It’s best to go into this film blind to not ruin anything. Sarah Snook (Succession) gives a career defining performance in this one.

Plot: Three magazine employees try to interview a man who is looking for a companion for time travel.
KBZ’s Take: This film is a low budget affair but hits much higher above its weight. Unlike most larger budget studio offerings about Time Travel, this film delves more into the psychological aspect of a supposed ‘inventor’ of Time Travel and if he’s crazy or somehow figured out something deemed impossible. It’s also a very original Romantic Comedy with stellar performances from Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass, Jake Johnson and Karan Soni. We want to say so much more about this film but see it as soon as you can as it’s one of the best of the Time Travel subgenre.
