Bait
Plot: Freak tsunami floods a grocery store with hungry sharks.
KBZ’s Take: Reviews haven’t been kind to this film as it was wrongly compared to some of the cheaper “Sharks Attack!” films that all came out at once in the early 2010’s. While the premise itself is a bit hard to buy into, if you can suspend disbelief for 90 minutes, you’ll have a great time.

Sanctum
Plot: Divers are trapped in a flooded underwater cave with oxygen running out.
KBZ’s Take: This is not a film to watch if you are claustrophobic. The bland and generic characters make watching the first half of this film challenging, but when the action and thrills kick in, it’s a gripping film. The underwater cinematography is some of the best you’ll ever see and helps raise the film above standard ‘disaster’ fare.

Plot: A blind woman, her husband and another couple set off on a boat to find hidden cash on an island.
KBZ’s Take: Little seen late 1980’s thriller, Midnight Crossing has two things going for it – the female leads and the tension through the final two acts. Kim Cattrall and Faye Dunaway are excellent in their roles, especially Dunaway who plays a blind woman. The film starts off a bit slow but gets interesting when it explores the infidelity angle between the couples in the second act, and then the pursuit of the actual treasure in the third and final act. A good film to seek out on streaming when you have the chance.

Black Sea
Plot: Mercenary submarine captain leads a British and Russian crew to find Nazi gold at the bottom of the Black Sea.
KBZ’s Take: Black Sea takes many queues from another film on this list – Das Boot. Jude Law plays against type and excels as the mercenary captain infatuated with finding the Nazi gold. There are many thrilling and tense moments in this film which almost turn it into a great Caper and Heist film. This film will appeal to any fans of both the Submarine and Aquatic Thriller subgenres.

Extortion
Plot: A doctor’s wife and son are kidnapped while on vacation.
KBZ’s Take: If this film has one message it’s “don’t ever rent a boat from strangers while on vacation”. Though the father makes some mind-numbingly stupid decisions in this film, there are a lot of thrilling moments throughout. It’s also a film that helps shine a spotlight on how extortion takes place in areas like the Bahamas and what to avoid.

All Is Lost
Plot: Elderly sailing veteran deals with a sinking boat in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
KBZ’s Take: The best film you will ever see with less than 1 minute of dialogue. Robert Redford drives the film as the sailing vet who encounters one catastrophe after another while his ship is slowly sinking. This is a film that can get by without any dialogue as you’ll be fixated on how our hero will get out of his increasingly desperate situation.

Kill Cruise
Plot: Yacht captain takes 2 British women with him on a trip to Barbados.
KBZ’s Take: This little known and seldom seen film is a guilty pleasure. It’s not a great film by any means, but it is surprisingly good with an excellent cast. Jürgen Prochnow, Patsy Kensit and Elizabeth Hurley play the three leads who deal with initial excitement that turns to boredom that then turns to sexual tension while out at sea. Though the ending is a bit of a letdown (and comes out of nowhere), there’s enough thrills in this film to make it a very entertaining ride.

Plot: An ocean liner capsizes at sea and passengers struggle to escape.
KBZ’s Take: Not to be confused with the inferior remake Poseidon (2006), the original is the film to see. This is one of those “70’s” films that younger generations should seek out as it’s a classic film that has enough action and thrills to keep anyone engaged. It’s a film that has aged well and is also one of the better (if not best) Disaster Films from the 70’s.

The Hunley
Plot: Tells the story of the crew of the Hunley – the first manually propelled submarine during the U.S. Civil War.
KBZ’s Take: This is a great film that will appeal to both fans of the Aquatic Thriller subgenre and fans of the Civil War subgenre. Though it primarily starts off as a typical Civil War film, it slowly descends into a taught thriller as the Confederacy is looking for a Hail Mary moment to win the war. That Hail Mary is the Hunley which is basically an underwater coffin with little to no chances of survival. There are quite a few excellent actors and recognizable faces in this film and it’s definitely a film to watch for a thrilling historical ride in naval warfare.

Das Boot
Plot: German submarine is hunted by allied forces during WWII.
KBZ’s Take: Though many have likely seen this film, we wanted to highlight it as our #1 as it’s the best film in multiple genres – Aquatic Thriller subgenre, Sea Warfare subgenre and World Cinema Action subgenre. This is a film that grips you from its opening scene and doesn’t let go for its almost 228- minute ride. It’s the film that put Wolfgang Petersen on the Hollywood map with his future action efforts including Air Force One (1997), The Perfect Storm (2000) and Troy (2004). For any film fans that have not yet seen this film, it’s one of the few that should be moved to the top of your queue right away.
