The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2000s Horror Films. In this series of horror-themed articles, we’ll be reviewing the creepiest scenes from horror films by decade. These articles will showcase some of the subtle (yet terrifying) scares that gave you nightmares as a child and goosebumps as an adult.

Our fourth article covers a decade of horror that was known for three major themes: the rise of Asian horror, the New French Extremity era and the growing influence of Found Footage Horror in the latter half of the 2000s.

Though Asian Horror began its ascent in the late 1990s with films such as Cure (1997), Ringu (1998), Whispering Corridors (1998) and Audition (1999), it wasn’t until the 2000s that this new wave of horror truly arrived on the scene. Primarily led by Japanese Horror (or J-Horror) Films, the decade began with some of the creepiest films of the entire horror genre including Spiral (2000), Pulse (2001) and Ju-on: The Grudge (2002) while Japanese horror directors such as Takashi Miike, Hideo Nakata and Takashi Shimizu would continue to master the atmospheric and creepy horror established by John Carpenter in the 1970s through the 1990s. And though Korean Horror (or K-Horror) films and horror out of Hong Kong (primarily driven by the Pang Brothers) also contributed to the Asian Horror craze, it was essentially a decade that began with a renewed focus on creepy horror driven by Japan.

While Asia was focused on horror-based atmosphere, the European continent was engaging in a new French Extremity era which included the New French Horror subgenre with a variety of films such as High Tension (2003), Frontier(s) (2007) and Martyrs (2008). This focus on graphic and gratuitous violence led to a rise in the Splatter & Gore Horror Films subgenre and was a massive influence on other 2000s horror films of the decade (with extreme violence) from Saw (2004) to Hostel (2006).

And finally, while the success of The Blair Witch Project (1999) was instrumental in giving more credence to the found footage format as a viable horror platform (and experience), it wasn’t until the latter part of the decade where this first person and video-based perspective truly gained traction with some classic films of the horror genre including Paranormal Activity (2007) and [REC] (2007).

After we get through each decade, we’ll have a cumulative article with the 25 Creepiest Horror Scenes of All Time and you can find each article below as we post them over the following months:

    • The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 1970s Horror Films
    • The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 1980s Horror Films
    • The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 1990s Horror Films
    • The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2000s Horror Films
    • The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2010s Horror Films
    • The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2020s Horror Films
    • The 25 Creepiest Horror Scenes of All Time

For our rankings we’re going to use some criteria to help define and refine our list. First, what is considered ‘creepy’ is often subjective. What might be creepy to some people might come off as boring to others. For the list we’ve compiled, we narrowed down the Top 25 to scenes that genuinely scared older members of KBZ to scenes that still had that creepiness factor 20+ years later for even younger viewers (who were often seeing the specific scene for the first time).

Second, we’re going to favor Asian-based horror films for this decade. As we noted above, when it comes to creepy horror, nobody did it better than the Japanese in the early years of 2000. However, there was a drop-off of sorts in the latter half of the decade, so we’ll only select a few of these greatest films that emulated the creepiness factor we look for in this list. In the near future, we’ll have an additional article dedicated to all the best (and creepiest) Asian horror films.

Third, as much as we’re favoring the Asian brand of horror, we’ll be de-emphasizing the New French Horror films and others that focused on graphic splatter & gore. Most of these films aren’t that creepy to begin with and use a different type of horror aesthetic to scare you.

Fourth, there were some truly frightening and creepy films that used a found footage format that we will include here. However, though some of these films were instrumental in defining the format, many films of this subgenre often resorted to jump scares and similar plots that grew tiresome (especially into the 2010s that we’ll address in our next article).

Fifth, we’re going to try something new with our lists by embedding BlueSky video posts of the scenes. You won’t need an account with BlueSky to view the videos, but there are some great film and horror buffs you can follow on the social network on hashtags feeds MovieSky and FilmSky. You can also follow KBZ Film on BlueSky here.

And sixth, we had to follow our rule for all of KBZ’s film listings where we only list films that have a 4.0/10 or higher rating.

As we mentioned above, we’ll be releasing additional lists of the creepiest horror films of the decade over the next few months. You can refer to our schedule above or subscribe to our newsletter to get updated as we release each new article.

    The Ring

The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2000s Horror Films

Plot: It sounded like just another urban legend: A videotape filled with nightmarish images, leading to a phone call foretelling the viewer’s death in exactly seven days. As a newspaper reporter, Rachel Keller was naturally skeptical of the story, until four teenagers all met with mysterious deaths exactly one week after watching just such a tape. Allowing her investigative curiosity to get the better of her, Rachel tracks down the video… and watches it. Now she has just seven days to unravel the mystery of the Ring.

KBZ’s Take: The Ring is one of a handful of J-Horror remakes that is considered superior to its source material. While both films have their strengths and weaknesses, we personally prefer the original Ringu (1998) for its unique and creepy atmosphere that the remake can’t quite match. But if you absolutely hate subtitles, go with The Ring for an introduction to Sadako – one of the scariest ‘ghosts’ of horror.

    Silent Hill

The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2000s Horror Films

Plot: In search for answers, a mother travels to the enigmatic town of Silent Hill when her daughter begins to suffer recurring nightmares related to the place. It doesn’t take long for her to discover its home to beings as equally haunting as the town itself.

KBZ’s Take: Silent Hill is considered one of the scariest horror-based video games of all time so it’s no surprise its film adaptation is also one of the scariest horror films of the decade. While most video games based on horror have been hit or miss – Doom (2005) was forgettable though Resident Evil (2002) established a horror film franchise – there’s little doubt that Silent Hill stands alone with the creepiest visuals from game to screen.

    The Mist

The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2000s Horror Films

Plot: After a violent storm, a dense cloud of mist envelops a small Maine town, trapping artist David Drayton and his five-year-old son in a local grocery store with other people. They soon discover that the mist conceals deadly horrors that threaten their lives, and worse, their sanity.

KBZ’s Take: Easily one of the best Stephen King Film Adaptations, The Mist is a dark and brooding film with some very creepy moments. We’re not sure if the cult themes or inter-dimensional monsters are the scarier aspects of this film, but we can unequivocally say it has one of the best (if not THE best) endings of the entire horror genre.

KBZ’s Take: Pulse (Kairo) was one of the B-tier J-Horror films that was released in the 2000’s. It was also another film from this initial wave that was remade as Pulse (2006). And like most J-Horror films, the original is much, much better than its subpar remake.

While it has the creepy and disturbing atmosphere of other J-Horror films of the time, it’s really a story about the internet and isolation – all tied together with a ghostly spin. It also differentiates itself from other J-Horror with its themes of Cosmic Horror, Techno Thrillers and Sci-Fi Apocalypse Films.

    28 Days Later

The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2000s Horror Films

Plot: Twenty-eight days after a killer virus was accidentally unleashed from a British research facility, a small group of London survivors are caught in a desperate struggle to protect themselves from the infected. Carried by animals and humans, the virus turns those it infects into homicidal maniacs — and it’s absolutely impossible to contain.

KBZ’s Take: Though we personally think the sequel 28 Weeks Later (2008) is an overall scarier film (and was #2 on our list of The Best 2000s Horror Films for Halloween), there’s no denying that the Church scene from the first film is the scariest of the franchise. From the ‘zombies’ hearing Jim call out ‘hello’ to his encounter with the ‘zombie’ priest, it’s a scene that truly visualizes just how horrifying a zombie apocalypse could be as you slowly realize what’s going on.

    30 Days of Night

The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2000s Horror Films

Plot: This is the story of an isolated Alaskan town that is plunged into darkness for a month each year when the sun sinks below the horizon. As the last rays of light fade, the town is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires bent on an uninterrupted orgy of destruction. Only the small town’s husband-and-wife Sheriff team stand between the survivors and certain destruction.

    — KBZ Film (@kbzfilm.bsky.social) April 30, 2025 at 11:03 AM

KBZ’s Take: The 2000’s was a banner decade for Films About Vampires with Blade II (2002), Underworld (2003), I Am Legend (2007), Let The Right One In (2008), Thirst (2009) and Daybreakers (2009). But despite this roster of terrifying blood suckers, 30 Days of Night was the creepiest by far with its themes of isolation and a town’s human population quickly discovering that they’re on the vampiric menu. With a host of creepy scenes, there’s none more powerful than the scene when a woman discovers that no one – not even God – will be saving her.

KBZ’s Take: [REC] is one of the better found footage films that has come out over the years and is well-known for its shock scares and quick descent into chaos. Even if you’re not a fan of the found footage format or subtitles, it’s a film we strongly recommend you check out for Halloween. It’s that scary. You can always check out the U.S. remake Quarantine (2008), but it just doesn’t compare to the terrifying original..

KBZ’s Take: Ju-On had a subpar U.S. remake in The Grudge (2004) even though it was also directed by Takashi Shimizu (director of the original). The original film doesn’t have the high production values or level of acting as the remake, but it makes up for it with its unique combination of unsettling sense of dread, creepiness and shock scares.

It’s one of a handful of films that we recommend to others when they’re looking for one of the scariest films of all time and a perfect film to watch on Halloween (even if you’re averse to subtitles).

KBZ’s Take: If you prefer the chaotic, fast-moving Zombies to the slow, lumbering Zombies of decades past, there’s no better Zombie film than Dawn of the Dead. However, there are enough differences in this film compared to the original to warrant watching both films. There’s also the remake’s opening scene of the zombie apocalypse that’s arguably the best (and creepiest) of the entire subgenre.

KBZ’s Take: The Descent is always our first recommendation to other people who ask for the best horror movie they haven’t seen – and it never disappoints. It has multiple levels of scares from an extremely claustrophobic setting to some very terrifying monsters. It’s known as one of the scariest films for a reason and if you still haven’t seen this film yet, you’re doing yourself (and your horror cred) a serious disservice.
