The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 1980s Horror Films. In this series of horror-themed articles, we’ll be reviewing the creepiest scenes from horror films by decade. These articles will showcase some of the subtle (yet terrifying) scares that gave you nightmares as a child and goosebumps as an adult.
Our second article will cover a decade that was arguably the best decade for horror ever – the 1980s. Though most of the decade was dominated by Slasher Films (and iconic slashers such as Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees and Freddy Krueger), there were still quite a few films and directors that mastered the creepiness and atmosphere of 1970s horror. Among these directors who excelled in emulating creepiness were John Carpenter, Dario Argento, Lamberto Braza and Lucio Fulci. So, join us on our journey as we look at the 25 Creepiest Scenes from 1980s horror from The Shining (1980) to Pet Sematary (1989).
After we get through each decade, we’ll have a cumulative article with the 25 Creepiest Horror Scenes of All Time and you can find each article below as we post them over the following months:
- The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 1970s Horror Films
- The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 1980s Horror Films
- The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 1990s Horror Films
- The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2000s Horror Films
- The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2010s Horror Films
- The 25 Creepiest Scenes from 2020s Horror Films
- The 25 Creepiest Horror Scenes of All Time
For our rankings we’re going to use some criteria to help define and refine our list. First, what is considered ‘creepy’ is often subjective. What might be creepy to some people might come off as boring to others. For the list we’ve compiled, we narrowed down the Top 25 to scenes that genuinely scared the older members of KBZ (who grew up in the 1980s) to scenes that still had that creepiness factor 40 years later for younger viewers (who were often seeing the specific scene for the first time).
Second, we also had to differentiate between creepy horror and shock horror. As we mentioned earlier in the article, the 80s were dominated by slashers and most of these horror films were of the shock variety and featured increasingly ‘creative’ slasher kills. So, though films such as A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) will make our list due to the creepy nightmare sequences featuring Freddy Krueger, many other slashers from Prom Night (1980) to Maniac Cop (1988) were scary, but not exactly creepy, so will not make our list.
Third, we also had to exclude films that had a creepy scene that would spoil the plot. These tended to be films where there was a creepy reveal towards the end of the film. A perfect example here would be Sleepaway Camp (1983). This is one of the best, underrated horror films of the decade with an iconic ending. However, though the ending is very creepy, it gives away the entire plot of the film so we can’t list it here. We do highly recommend the film though if you have not seen it yet or are just getting into all the horror films of the 1980s.
Fourth, we’re going to try something new with our lists by embedding BlueSky video posts of the scenes. You won’t need an account with BlueSky to view the videos, but there are some great film and horror buffs you can follow on the social network on hashtags feeds MovieSky and FilmSky. You can also follow KBZ Film on BlueSky here.
And fifth, we had to follow our rule for all of KBZ’s film listings where we only list films that have a 4.0/10 or higher rating.
As we mentioned above, we’ll be releasing additional lists of the creepiest horror films of the decade over the next few months. You can refer to our schedule above or subscribe to our newsletter to get updated as we release each new article.

KBZ’s Take: If you grew up in the 80s, this was a horror film of legend that older kids talked about and tried to explain its gruesomeness. This isn’t a film for the faint of heart as it’s not only one of the most extreme horror films of the decade, but also one of its best.
We do want to warn people that the film is very graphic and for our scene below, we had to stop it before the very gruesome and disturbing content is shown. It’s not a horror scene you will ever forget.

KBZ’s Take: 1985 had a one-two punch of Day of the Dead (1985), which is #12 on our list, and Return of the Living Dead. Both are classic films of the Zombie Film subgenre, but Return is a slightly better (and scarier) film. Though the film has equal parts horror and comedy, it’s the film’s early comedic elements that catch you off guard once it transitions to full-on horror mode with some truly frightening sequences (including the appearance of “Tarman”).

KBZ’s Take: Halloween III: Season of the Witch was a film before its time. Unfortunately, horror films in the early 1980’s were still in Slasher Horror film mode, and without the iconic Michael Myers slashing his way through unsuspecting co-eds, the film didn’t have much chance of success.
However, over time, the film has achieved a cult classic reputation with its innovative themes of the occult and technology. What more can you say about a film that somehow blends pagan rituals, robots and televisions emitting signals to activate microchips to unleash killer insects exploding out of bodies – all contained within a Halloween-themed corporate conspiracy?

The Fog

Plot: Strange things begin to occur as a tiny California coastal town prepares to commemorate its centenary. Inanimate objects spring eerily to life; Rev. Then a mysterious iridescent fog descends upon the village, and more people start to die.

KBZ’s Take: Of all of John Carpenter horror films, The Fog is one of his least well-known and seen films. But it’s also one of his scariest films after Halloween (1978), The Thing (1982) and Prince of Darkness (1987).
Though the film was dismissed as a below average horror film on its release in 1980, it’s earned cult classic status over time as its eternal themes of supernatural revenge continue to scare subsequent generations. This is one film we would highly recommend for younger generations that want more atmospheric scares on Halloween night.

KBZ’s Take: This gory, demon-led splatter fest was the #1 film on our list of the Top Films About the Devil, Demons & Hell You Haven’t Seen – 1970 – 1989. Like Angel Heart and The Prince of Darkness, we assume most hardcore horror and subgenre fans (especially older fans) have seen it.
We have had a chance to re-watch this film a few times over the years (while trying to remove a nostalgic lens) and we’ll readily admit the film comes off a bit dated and cheesy – especially with the English dub of the film. However, what still scared any kid of the 80’s remains true today – Demon / Zombie horror with some repulsive gore, people trying to escape a confined space and who can you trust before they turn into a Demon. Like other classic horror subgenre films, there are scenes you likely won’t forget from this film which makes it much easier to highly recommend to younger fans of the subgenre.

KBZ’s Take: Though Sam Raimi’s sequels to The Evil Dead would increasingly blend humor with horror, the original film is a no-holds-barred horror fest from start to finish. Despite a low budget, the film’s use of practical effects and gore would influence entire subgenres from Survival Horror to Cosmic Horror and redefine ‘cabin in the woods’ horror. It’s a raw, brutal and intense horror film that features shocking sequences that continue to terrify viewers to this day.

KBZ’s Take: 45 years later, The Shining is still considered one of the scariest films ever created with its perfect blend of the supernatural, psychological horror and psychic powers. It’s one of Jack Nicholson’s career performances as Jack Torrance who is slowly losing his mind to the Overlook Hotel.
There are so many creepy scenes in the film that it’s hard to choose just one. However, we ultimately went with the very weird (and creepy) ‘room’ that Wendy happens upon as she searches for Danny.

Plot: Teenagers in a small town are dropping like flies, apparently in the grip of mass hysteria causing their suicides. Nancy and her boyfriend, Glen, must devise a plan to lure the monster out of the realm of nightmares and into the real world…

KBZ’s Take: Freddy Kreuger often makes up the third horror great of the triumvirate of 80’s slashers – after Michael Meyers and Jason Vorhees. However, unlike those slashers, Freddy doesn’t hide behind a mask and rose to fame with his patented knives-infused glove. Nightmare also latched on to supernatural themes of horror that the Friday the 13th and Halloween franchises would soon follow.
Even though the film is over 40 years old, it’s still one of the scarier films from the 80’s with one especially creepy nightmare scene set in an alley.

Poltergeist

Plot: Strange and creepy happenings beset an average California family, the Freelings – Steve (Craig T. Nelson), Diane (JoBeth Williams), teenaged Dana (Dominique Dunne), eight-year-old Robbie (Oliver Robins), and five-year-old Carol Ann (Heather O’Rourke) – when ghosts commune with them through the television set. Initially friendly and playful, the spirits turn unexpectedly menacing, and, when Carol Ann goes missing, Steve and Diane turn to a parapsychologist and eventually an exorcist for help.

KBZ’s Take: If there’s one film that’s as scary over 40 years later as it was in 1982, it’s the original Poltergeist. From its melting/peeling face scene to its swimming pool full of real-life skeletons to one of the scariest depictions of a ghost in the subgenre, Poltergeist just keeps hammering you with scenes of haunted horror.
It’s a film that had no business being rated PG at the time and scared the daylights out of a generation. And if you were strong enough (at an adolescent age) to make it through most of the film, you then encountered the clown scene which became the legend of childhood nightmares and significantly increased the sales of night lights.

KBZ’s Take: Another John Carpenter horror film that has evolved into a cult classic and is now considered one of the scariest films of all time. There are too many classic horror sequences in the film to list here, but we’ll always go with the ‘Spider Head’ scene as one of the truly scariest and creepiest moments in any horror film – period.
The Thing should be on your very short list of films to watch on Halloween if you somehow haven’t yet seen (or haven’t developed the courage to see) this classic horror film.
