In this fourth special edition article of the Body Swap Film subgenre, we’re going to look at the Best Recent Body Swap Films from 2021 – 2024. In previous articles, we looked at The Best Films of the Body Swap Film Subgenre, New Body Swap Films (from 2018 – 2023), Body Swap Thrillers, Romantic Body Swap Films, Raunchy Body Swap Films and some lesser-known Body Swap Films in previous articles here, here and here.
Body Swaps feature themes of a person’s consciousness in another body (often involving a female to male body swap, male to female body swap or an age-related body swap). Though the majority of films in this subgenre are comedies, over the last few years, there has been an increase in horror and thriller films using elements of a body swap or body switch with the focus on the psychological effects of inhabiting another person’s body.
In this article, we’re going to review the best films released over the last four years including several great Body Swap films released in 2024. Some of these must-see films include a psychological thriller about a group of young adults who swap bodies with each other (and some of them don’t want to swap back), a Slapstick Comedy out of Thailand with themes of time travel and swapping bodies with an ancestor 100 years in the past and one of the best new Body Horror films of recent years featuring Demi Moore who injects herself with a substance to create a younger version of herself.
Our list of Body Swap Films includes over 93+ films that span different genres including comedy, sci-fi and even horror. For films that are not technically Body Swap films but utilize similar themes (i.e. a person explores a parallel timeline where their life is different), our list of Contemporary & Urban Fantasy Films, Alternate History Films and Films About the Multiverse will most likely include those types of films. Here is our list of the Best Recent Body Swap Films from 2021 – 2024:
#10
Family Switch

Plot: When family members switch bodies with each other during a rare planetary alignment, their hilarious journey to find their way back to normal will bring them closer together than they ever thought possible.
KBZ’s Take: Veterans of this subgenre will likely find many of the body swap situations in Family Switch very familiar. The film doesn’t break much new ground here (except for the baby and dog body swap) but it’s still a light-hearted Christmas film that most of the family can enjoy.

Dad Is Here

Plot: An unreliable father and his super reliable daughter swap bodies due to a magic lottery ticket. The gangster father (now his daughter) causes chaos in school while the smart daughter (now her father) straightens out his life.
KBZ’s Take: Dad is Here is a Chinese Body Swap film that blends together equal amounts of drama and comedy. The comedy is primarily through the body swap situations involving the father and daughter that, thankfully, don’t repurpose many of the overused film tropes of the subgenre. Much of the comedy is carried by Sato (as the daughter who now has her father’s mind) as she implements new schemes in her high school.
But our recommendation primarily comes from the film’s third act which is dramatic, heart-warming and one of the better cinematic sequences of a father and daughter relationship.

#8
Irish Wish

Plot: When the love of her life gets engaged to her friend, Maddie puts her feelings aside to be a bridesmaid at their wedding in Ireland. Days before the wedding, Maddie makes a spontaneous wish for true love, only to wake up as the bride-to-be.
KBZ’s Take: Irish Wish doesn’t break new ground in the subgenre but is a decent fantasy-based Romantic Comedy. It’s also technically not a Body Swap film (as Maddie (Lindsey Lohan) becomes the bride-to-be vs. actually swapping bodies with her friend). The film is more akin to other fantasy-based romantic films such as The Family Man (2000) and Take Me Back for Christmas (2023) where someone lives an alternate version of their life (and finds their true purpose).
However, there are some Body Swap film tropes in the film that make it a worthwhile watch for fans of the subgenre.

Plot: A young girl goes back to the past to choose if she wants to change her family fortune.
KBZ’s Take: If you’re familiar with Stephen Chow films such as Kung Fu Hustle (2005), Chinatown ChaCha is a similar martial arts comedy but with themes of time travel, fate & destiny and female to male body swap situations (as Kie (Ranchrawee Uakoolwarawat) inhabits the body of her male ancestor). And though the film is basically a very funny action-packed slapstick comedy, it still has a few hilarious body swap situations with Kie learning how a male body ‘functions’.
Unfortunately, we cannot find a link to stream this film at this time and it’s a bummer. This is one film we think many fans of the body swap film subgenre would enjoy and we’ll update this article once a streaming platform carries it.

#6
Devils

Plot: As a detective corners the serial killer who murdered his partner years ago, they get into an accident. When the detective wakes up in a hospital, he realizes he switched bodies with the murderer.
KBZ’s Take: We can’t go too in-depth into this film as it’s better to see without knowing much about it. What we will say is that it does involve a detective and serial killer swapping bodies and the resulting suspense as to how the body swap occurred and where the serial killer’s partners are operating (and continuing with murder).
The film is bloody and violent in the vein of other South Korean thrillers such as The Chaser (2008) and I Saw the Devil (2010). However, it’s a tier below those films but still one worth seeing for fans of the subgenre and fans of South Korean Thriller Action Films.

#5
Supercool

Plot: Lifelong friends Neil and Gilbert’s undeniable bond gets pushed to its limits when Neil makes a wish that comes true.
KBZ’s Take: Supercool is basically a B-movie version of Superbad (2007) with an underlying Body Swap theme. This is a very raunchy film from its use of foul language to many (often hilarious) sexual situations. However, the Body Swap theme seems a bit underdeveloped as Neil (Jake Short) makes a wish to be popular and his body is replaced by that of Ace (Josh Cranston). This is where the Body Swap comedy falls a bit short as you only see Ace in reflections and don’t get the entire effect of the male supermodel that Neil has become.
But it still has some great moments that are very raunchy and very funny. This is a film we would recommend for every Raunchy Comedy fan and completists of the Body Swap film subgenre.

#4
Switch

Plot: On Christmas Day, a popular actor switches lives with his manager. Suddenly, he wakes up to a family he doesn’t know while his manager is now one of the most popular actors in cinema.
KBZ’s Take: For our Body Swap collection, we have a more expansive view of Body Swap and Body Switch films that also includes fantasy-based ‘What If?’ films. An example of this type of film is The Family Man (2000) where Nicolas Cage is transported to an alternate life where he has married his college sweetheart, has kids and doesn’t have his high-powered investment career any longer. Some people might argue that this isn’t a true Body Swap film, but we believe these types of films incorporate enough Body Swap themes to be considered part of the subgenre.
The South Korean film, Switch, is like The Family Man but with an added twist – Jo Yoon hasn’t only woken up to an alternate life (like in The Family Man) but his manager has now replaced him as one of the most popular actors in South Korea. The film hits on many of the same beats as The Family Man and has some very funny Body Swap-like film sequences.
Switch is one of the better recent films of the subgenre and also one of our new favorite holiday films. Highly recommended for fans of the subgenre and holiday-themed family films.

Spiritwalker

Plot: A man loses his memory and wakes up in a new body every twelve hours.
KBZ’s Take: Most films in the Body Swap subgenre are comedic by nature. This is not one of those films. This is the rare outlier within the subgenre that foregoes comedy for Dark Fantasy, Mystery and some very violent Action. If John Wick (2014) involved Body Swaps, you would have Spiritwalker.
This South Korean film involves a man who swaps into another body every 12 hours with multiple people seemingly trying to kill him (and his new identity). How and why he continues to transfer into new bodies is the film’s mystery that is slowly revealed between some very violent and action-packed sequences.
This is a very good film that could have been a classic if not for a somewhat muddled second act. However, the first and third acts of the film are some of the best action sequences you’ll find and are reminiscent of films like John Wick and The Man from Nowhere (2010). If you’re looking for more thrilling Body Swap themes coupled with mystery and ultraviolence, then look no further than Spiritwalker.

Plot: Elisabeth Sparkle, renowned for an aerobics show, faces a devastating blow on her 50th birthday as her boss fires her. Amid her distress, a laboratory offers her a substance which promises to transform her into an enhanced version of herself.
KBZ’s Take: If you’ve been on social media the last month, you’ve likely seen almost daily postings about The Substance and how it’s the scariest film of the year and one of the best Body Horror films of all time. After finally seeing the film, we can say the hype is real – this is one terrifying film.
It’s not a film for people with weak stomachs as the film has some extreme Body Horror sequences and it is very bloody and gory. But it’s also a film where the physical horror enhances the psychological horror as the story progresses. It’s ultimately a satire on society and aging that hits home more effectively due to its extremely dark take on the obsession with physical beauty.
The only reason we do not have this film listed as #1 here is that the film is technically a body swap-adjacent film. It utilizes many themes of a Body Swap film and layers those on top of a Psychological Horror film mixed with additional elements of cloning, genetic engineering and more.
It’s truly a unique film and experience that is a blast to watch – if you can handle it.

Plot: A pre-wedding reunion descends into a psychological nightmare for a group of college friends when a surprise guest arrives with a mysterious suitcase that starts to tear the group apart.
KBZ’s Take: It’s What’s Inside is much more of a Psychological Thriller film with horror elements than a straight up Psychological Horror film. However, it’s one of the most unique films we’ve seen this year with its brilliant take on body swaps and the psychological ramifications of inhabiting another person’s body and identity.
The film takes common body swap tropes and turns them on their head in a darkly comedic and mysterious manner. The less you know about the film going in, the better your experience will be. And we can definitively say, this is one film of the subgenre you will want to watch multiple times to fully understand all the twists and turns that truly mess with your mind.
